View Full Version : FIFA and their Shirt Removal Yellow Cards
I can't believe in this day and age FIFA have taken a step back in the joys of scoring a goal by forcing referee's to award yellow cards, and sending's off's.
Its just one of those stupid laws football can do without because it restricts players and fan's from enjoying the moment.
Wonder who's idea it was to push through the law.

I see the inane pointlessnes of the law Dev but also whenever i see a player taking their shirt off and running around i think they look like a twat!
Why can't they just pop the shirt over the back of their neck and do the Aeroplane?

I never saw a problem with it, who does it hurt? FIFA's being a killjoy.
This was one of the things that separated football from all of the other sports, it livened things up. I've never understood why they cracked down on it.

I find it absolutely silly and I suspect most referee's wished they didn't need to take out the yellow card for this.....its just stupid.
a ridiculous rule for a ridiculous celebration.
they should just shake hands, pat each other on the back and say..'well done old chap...hurrah!'
I thought this was the reason, but decided to look it up and found this under yahoo answers:
"Players get a yellow card for removing their shirts because football (soccer) is a WORLD sport so the FIFA have implemented a yellow card rule on shirt removing because in certain countries, removing your shirt is the ultimate disrespect. Shirt removing can also be seen as excessive celebration and time consuming."
I think it relates to Islamic countries, who find it offensive for a man to reveal their naked torso in public.

Dev, always the most likely to start a thread complaining about this rule.
Personally, I don't see the problem with the celebration, except when performed by Bullard, Drogba and the like.

I always thought it had something to do with sponsorships.. Because obviously a goal is shown countless times on the news, highlights etc.. So when a player removes his shirt, the sponsor on the shirt won't be getting shown as much as the company would like?
Either way, pointless rule. I can fully understand why a player gets booked for going into the crowd, due to safety reasons, but this doesn't harm anybody at all.

I got a fxxxxing yellow on monday night for scoring my 2nd goal of the game and taking my shirt off....and then watched a player getting his 2nd yellow in a CL qualifying game on wednesday after scoring a vital 3rd goal to tie the match against Fiorentina...its just stupid.
The rule. Not the goals. Or the players. I mean.

I dont see the point in anyway because at the end of the game alot of players take there tops off anyway and nothing happens then :S so if it doesnt affect anybody at the end of the game why does it in the middle of the game when play has stopped due to a goal ?

one of the reasons i have distaste for the NFL or as some dub it "NoFunLeague"...is their long list of rules that are a buzzkill. such as the no celebrating after a touchdown. same thing here really. cant stand these rules. especially in football where goals generally are hard to come by...they should be allowed to celebrate as they see fit. i can see if they go running into the stands cause half a riot and take 5 minutes to get back onto his side of the pitch...ok give a warning or a yellow in some cases. but not simply because they remove the shirt.
I think FIFA is right! No one wants to see this offensive celebration...

And hes holding his shirt up in the air! And the way his figners are is showing even more disrespect!
I think he should be punished by getting baned from football for life. And wages shared between everyone on thisisanfield.com every week.
If they are going to dish out yellow cards for celebrating a goal, why not also issue yellow cards when players take their shirts off at the end of match's and swap shirts as well.
The religious reason is a non bloody starter for me; football shouldn't need to change for a religion. Period.

To be human is to do what comes naturally in celebration...? As we have always done for the last 100 years in the game of football.
Not because a group of corporate socialites who probably don't even play the game decided they can appease sponsors or religious fanatics by implementing a law that goes AGAINST the spirit of the game.
Football is emotional. It always has been. And always will be.
Take away the emotional aspect of it and what do you have?

While I am sympathetic to those (players and fans) who don't like or understand the rule, it is there in plain black and white, it has been administered consistently and there is, frankly, no excuse for violating it.
Players should not go too close to the crowd, should not make offensive or otherwise inciting gestures, and should not take their shirts off.
My pesonal favorite is how Gerrard celebrates goals scored. Athletic, passionate, dare I say, manly.
I absolutely abhor the 'thumb in the mouth' celebration. I don't care what it is about, it just looks absolutely stupid.

I second that. It's painfully obnoxious.
Dev, didn't you mention that we'd do well to ditch Carlsberg as it contributes, at least, to our lack of business in Islamic countries?

I would be willing to bet when Macha scored, you had a small smile despite his thumb in his mouth
I dont get why players get booked for the removal of a jersey, I mean they might be feeling the heat and need to let some air at their bodys to cool themselves down for the restart of the game, they do it for need not to look good at all. FIFA got it wrong with this rule. They just dont understand footballers.

Players get booked for removing their jerseys because the rules of the game state, clearly, that they are not to remove their jerseys whilst playing.
Whether one agrees with or even understands the rationale for the rule, it's still a rule, it's been around for quite a while, it has been administered even-handedly and it takes an 'affirmative' series of acts on the part of a player to actually violate it. That it's "natural" to want to take one's shirt off to celebrate a goal is not a rationale for it being allowed.
Lets just hope FIFA isn't following in the NFL's lead.
Now you can't put your hands on the ground in a celebration. You also can't lay down, take off your helmet, put your hands on the ground, throw the ball on the ground if it is remotely in the same direction as an opposing player. Players get penalized for trash talking all the time. Could you imagine Torres giving away a free kick for talking shit to an opposing Centre half?
It is a fucking sport. We can't forget that sports are COMPETITIVE.

It would def. be beneficial as a whole for the corporate image of the club, both at home and overseas to ditch Carlsberg. We now know Standard Chartered will be paying 80 million over 4 years, compared to the 7 million deal we had with Carlsberg which I had stated there was no way Carlsberg were going to pay out more than the 15 million we were looking for.
At the moment, muslims in general won't buy the kit unless the shirt comes without sponsorship on the front and adidas does not market this in asia or the middle east. Indonesia is the world's biggest muslim country by population, and Malaysia and Brunei are HUGE Liverpool markets, along with the middle east, Iran and Australia/NZ.
We want fans to be buying club products don't we? Kinda difficult when the fans can't because we choose to be sponsored by a brew company. :)
Anyways, its going to be in the past....soon.

It was implemented in this decade. But not for over 100 years before that.
And I like things "the way they used to be" thank you very much.

Agreed. Its going to the dogs..and we are essentially killing the emotional and human elements of the game....

Last season, or 2 seasons ago? Chad Johnson or Terrell Owens got penalized for pretending to be an Olympic Sprinter. Tell me that isn't ridiculous.

Mate, I understand that and appreciate it. My point is this: How many fucking years of continuous and largely consistent application of a 'new' rule does it take for footballers, especially professional ones who play a LOT of professional football, to realize that it's a fucking rule, the penalty for breaking it is a yellow card and YES, you WILL be shown a second yellow card for it and get sent off for it?
while they are at it, they should give yellow card to players who spit while on the field, shouldn't they? keke

If and when that becomes a rule, the violation of which is a caution, then, yes, by all means they should enforce it.
Professional (especially) footballers are and ought to be expected to abide by the rules of the game, notwithstanding their own 'feelings' about them.
If they don't like the rules, they should choose another sport or another line of work.

I think you should be allowed to do this, whats the harm in it? A yellow card for it is a it far.

And my favorite color is red. I don't like the rule about 'clashing kits'. Liverpool should be allowed to always play with our solid red kits on.
