Following Dublin_Kopite's indepth interview in Ireland in Issue 1 to Redbj's views from Melbourne in Issue 2, we turn our attentions to New Zealand. A country unique in its beauty. Rugged mountains, the greenest of green slopes, serious seas that pound the shores, and a dramatic and varied landscape, a landscape that will be home to the 2011 rugby World Cup....

With this in mind, I caught up with our New Zealand based Red, Spitfire. With over 760 posts and an ever present member on the TIA Forums since 2006, here's our latest TIA Frontline interview with Spitfire....
Spitfire, how long have you supported LFC and what made you decide to support the club?

I’ve supported Liverpool ever since I was a young boy, so some 25-28 years. When I was young as I recall it, we only had an hour long round up show and maybe a few of the big matches each year on TV. However Liverpool always seemed to figure prominently and I was drawn to the way they played.
Living in Auckland, just how big a club are Liverpool in your part of the world? Are there many Liverpool fans in New Zealand?

Football has always struggled in this part of the world, in New Zealand we are a Rugby nation. That said, football is growing. The premier league is the most followed of the foreign leagues, Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal have the largest following. This is probably reflective of their success with our generation in line with more exposure on TV.

You don’t really get specific club pubs, that said my mates and I support an array of clubs and we will often catch up and games where we are playing each other for a bit of banter. Now with Sky TV you will probably see 75-80% of Liverpool games here on TV during a season.
Spitfire, what is your realistic aim for Liverpool to achieve in 2010/11?

In all honesty I have concerns over the lack of depth in our squad – to mount any serious challenge we are going to have to rely on key players being available all season. With that in mind I have no expectation for Europe, in fact I have no issues with us using it as an opportunity to blood some of the younger players – such as Wilson, Pacheco and Shelvey. If Torres and Gerrard stay fit and Cole and Meireles settles quickly we could challenge top 3. If not I think it would be an achievement to end up 4th.
How do you assess Roy Hodgson’s start to his Anfield career…

There is a refreshing frankness to him so far, whether impressed with his signings or not he has moved quickly to secure the players he wants the key now is to get them to perform. I personally am not a fan of 4-4-2, it presents tactical limitations – this was emphasised in our game vs Man City. I also hope he doesn’t persist with Gerrard playing deeper as he and Torres are a proven world class combination, and let’s face it goals win games. To be fair to him though he deserves at least till Christmas to start impacting on the team, to judge before then would be unfair.

Napoli have some class about them and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if they give us a few headaches. As I mentioned earlier I would like to see us give some of the younger players a chance, these games won’t be as physically demanding as the prem but would prove a good yardstick of their technical capabilities. We should progress but each of these teams present potentially entertaining matches.
Among the games will also be a morning kick off at Old Trafford…. Your thoughts on the upcoming games this month…

With the international window at the start of the month it is essentially 6 games in 20 days. The 3 prem games present one of the biggest matches of the season and 2 potential banana skins in Birmingham and Sunderland, if we secured 7 points from the 3 games I would be pleased. With the other 3 games I think we will quickly learn whether Roy has full confidence in his entire squad. Rotation will be essential, and as I said earlier I hope he gives some of the younger guys a crack.
What are your thoughts on Konchesky joining?

Konchesky sums up our transfer window I think solid but not spectacular. He will do a job, probably won’t ever be made a fool of. I don’t expect him to wow us but he will solve a problem position for us for a season or 2 while we look for a long term solution.

I am a bit disappointed we let a couple of youngsters go in the opposite direction, especially while we can’t compete financially; our youth is more important than ever and we really need to start having some faith and gambling in them a bit. The one thing Rafa left this club was the foundations to build our youth set up. It would be tragic to see Roy under utilise this.

He had a good world cup, and has been a solid performer for Porto, we have seen a few late bloomers pop up like Arshavin, I sincerely hope Meireles can prove a shrewd buy for us. The fact that he hasn’t come with a premium price tag may give him some leeway to settle (unlike Aqualani). With him here now, I would like to see a midfield 3. Teamed up with Gerrard and either Lucas or Poulsen could do well for us. Him and Gerrard in a two man midfield and I would start to worry a bit.

The player would be Steven Gerrard, the question as follows

“Steven you have been at this club all your playing career, and have had constant speculation over your leaving the club for further honours even to the point almost moving to Chelsea. Do you truly believe you can lift a premiership trophy here or do you stay at Anfield out of loyalty or other reasons?"

Present – Now probably Reina, he is Liverpool though and through apart form the fact that he’s Spanish! The number of times he has single handedly kept us in games over recent times can’t be underestimated. I would love to see him lift some major silverware at some point in his career here.

Probably Gerrard’s goal in Istanbul. It wasn’t the greatest goal ever but what it sparked is probably one of the most amazing comebacks ever.
Assuming money was no object and any player chosen would like to come to club then –

Essien – This guy is an absolute beast, and does it all. I would have him anchor a midfield three of him, Meireles and Gerrard.

The second would be Messi, not very original but he can play wide, has pace and beat players; what we are sorely missing. That would give us a front 3 of Messi, Torres and Cole.
OK, so he used to frustrate the hell out of us, but he could produce a moment of sheer magic that made it all seem worthwhile. Funny thing, I was wondering, is this how Joe Cole might turn out? There seem to be plenty of similarities, both creative, great touch, but occasionally drive you up the wall. It's a pity the crowd couldn't see beyond the fact he plays for Utd, and give the guy a break, The abuse felt so wrong, considering he was effectively a 'guest' in our house. Sure, if he's wearing a Utd top, then I guess that's fair game, but he was wearing our shirt, at our player's testamonial, after (one assumes) being invited. De Telegraaf has reported that the 30-year-old was sent to hospital for scans after he sprained a joint landing awkwardly stretching to reach a cross.
Kuyt started Friday's 5-0 Euro 2012 qualifying thumping of San Marino but has been ruled out of Tuesday's clash against Finland.
Manager Bert Van Marwijk is quoted as saying: "He will probably have a few weeks off and at 4pm today he will step on to the plane to Liverpool."
It so iritating it seems every International week we get a player back injured, the only good thing about this I guess is that Pacheco may get to play on the left, or Babel.

September 4, 2010 by David Bartlett

LIVERPOOL FC has finally succeeded in its bid to trademark the Liver Bird.

The club caused uproar two years ago when it emerged it had applied for the rights to the citys world-famous symbol.

After talks with Liverpool council, the Reds agreed to abandon the bid.

But it has now emerged the council and the football club made a deal whereby they both applied for different trademarks of the famous birds.

The club was granted a trademark by the Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office of the European Union (TMDREU).

The council is seeking its own trademark through the UKs Intellectual Property Office.

Council officials said the deal would mean the club was free to crack down on counterfeit football merchandise.

But crucially, they said it will mean the council can act as guardians of the famous symbol for other businesses and charities which have long used the Liver Birds.

Council leader Joe Anderson said: When Liverpool FC first raised the issue of registering the Liver Bird logo, it caused a lot of concern that charities and other organisations which used the Liver Bird on their literature and promotional material would be unable to do so in the future.

The clubs aim is to stop counterfeiters from cashing in by using the badge on pirated goods and they do not want to stop the logo being used legitimately.

We are happy to help them in these aims and the agreement we reached means the club can protect its Liver Bird logo, other organisations can continue to use the Liver Bird and the council will be able to protect its design of the image.

The Liver Bird belongs to the people of Liverpool and the council is committed to doing all it can to make sure it remains that way. The club filed its registration with TMDREU in January and the trademark, covering Europe, was granted in July.

It covers a whole host of materials from clothing to keyrings and is valid until 2020.

Today a spokesman for LFC said: Our position was always to solely seek to protect our specific version of the Liver Bird to stop its use in counterfeit Liverpool FC merchandise.

We never intended to challenge the usage by the council or other charity or community groups of their version of the Liver Bird, and were delighted to work with the local authority on this matter.

Thought we could have a dedicated thread to this now that the transfer window has closed instead of other thread being cluttered with lineup's etc. !!

So now that we've got a (semi) settled group of players which are unlikely going to change throughout the season. What do you think is our strongest starting 11 and what formation should we employ !? Should we play a different formation home and away and finally how should we approach Europe!?

For me our strongest starting 11 at home is the following;

..........................Reina

Johnson......Carra......Agger.....Konchesky

.................Meireles
............................Gerrard

Jovanovic.............Cole...................Kuyt

.........................Torres

This formation would allow us to be very attacking and our width would be provided from two full backs who both like to get forward and cross the ball. With Jova and Kuyt playing opposite wings I would expect them to come infield and link up with Torres possibly interchanging position from time to time (Just cause Torres like's to drift out wide at times and collect the ball and both Kuyt and Jova like to cut inside a lot).

This would be my strongest lineup away from home in this formation;

..........................Reina

Johnson......Carra......Agger.....Konchesky

........................Poulsen

Kuyt..........Gerrard.......Meireles........Cole

..........................Torres.................. .......

This formation is very similar to that on the one at home but obviously Jova has been taken out to input Poulsen. With that trio in the CM I would hope that would make us very physical and hard to beat. Kuyt on the wing for the hard work as always along with pushing Cole out wide as I think he's more tactically sound than Jovanovic.

In eurpoe I would like to give players who don't play to often a good run so my lineup would be the following;

......................Reina

Kelly......Skrtel......Wilson......Aurelio

........................Poulsen
................Lucas
Maxi...................................Pacheco
.............N'Gog.......Babel..................

I think that team would be strong enough to deal with most opposition and I would like Babel and Pacheco to constantly keep swapping as both can play either position and Pacheco like's to drift in a lot ofo of that left flank.

Just my opinion but that's what I would love to see :-)

Mods - Please excuse me if Im wrong but ive searched around and cant find any real thread highlighting Carra's testimonial week. I looked into the individual player thread but there didnt seem to be much interest there so I thought I'd start a new thread

I know its been a difficult week but surely we cant let this week pass without paying tribute to a current LFC legend!?!?

People constantly write the lad off (even some of our own supporters at times) but for me he should still be the first name on the teamsheet at the back every week and still has a good few year in him going forward.

The following article from Didi Hamann says it all for me.....

http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/lates...-kaiser-s-view

Carra Week: The Kaiser's view

In an exclusive column for Carra Week, Reds legend Dietmar Hamann reveals why our No.23 would always be the first name on his teamsheet.

When I was asked to write this column for Liverpoolfc.tv I knew that I would have to include my favourite Jamie Carragher moment.

That instantly provided me with a problem.

Why is that you may ask?

Well, the answer is simple, there have been so many great Carra performances over the years, it's nigh on impossible to select one.

He always performs when he pulls on that red shirt and he always gives his best for the Liverpool cause.

If you look back over the past five years he's been one of the best centre backs in Europe because he reads the game so well and always puts the team first.

I remember his performance against Chelsea in the 2005 Champions League semi-final when he was quite simply unbeatable - but I think you have to look to the final in Istanbul as a game that characterised what he is all about.

Not only was he full of fight and spirit to help us get back on terms, but in extra-time he would have been willing to give his last breath to keep Milan out.

He just kept going down with cramp and lesser players would probably have had to go off with it. But he never considered it for one second. He just kept making blocks and tackles.

There will be a lot of fans out there who can't remember the days when Jamie Carragher's name wasn't on the team sheet. He's been an incredible servant to Liverpool Football Club and if anyone deserves a testimonial, it is him.

It's very rare that players stay with one club now. When you think of the number of years he's been playing for a team of this stature, at such a high level, it really is an outstanding achievement.

He's a great character on the pitch because he hates to lose and helps to drive everyone on. Off the pitch he's a great guy too. He's always looking to have a laugh and he's brilliant for team spirit.

He improved a great deal during my time as his teammate - of course, the same can be said of Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen. They were very talented youngsters coming through.

But I think over the years Carra has just got better and better. He did really well at full-back for a while but I think when Rafael Benitez moved him to centre back it took him to a new level.

He's won almost everything there is to win at Anfield and I think he will be remembered as one of the best players to have played for Liverpool. He's certainly up there with the greats - and when you consider some of the defenders that have played here, that's some accolade. I think he is deserving of it.

When you look at the impact he has had and the overall influence over the past 10 years or so, then it's hard to pick out many who have been as important.

I know he's made more Liverpool appearances than most players now. I don't know whether he can catch Ian Callaghan, but he could have three to five years left in him, so let's see what happens.

I hope I can get back to Merseyside to witness some part in his big day on Saturday. I'm involved with Milton Keynes' match against Hartlepool around midday but I'd love to be able to join in the celebrations.

I've been lucky enough to have played with a lot of good footballers but you always knew what you would get with Carra.

If there was a big game coming up he would be the first name on your team sheet. He'll defend that Liverpool goal with his life and that's what you need. You want teammates who will do anything for the cause.

The fans often sing about a 'team of Carraghers' and I think everyone associated with the club knows how lucky they are to have had Jamie in their ranks. Hopefully that will be the case for many years to come too.

A Modern day legend for me, If Gerrard is the heart of the side Carra is the soul.

Thanks for everything Jamie and long may you continue to serve Liverpool.

This is my small tribute to one of Liverpool’s many...

This is my small tribute to one of Liverpool’s many legendary fans – Dolly Wallanger – who sadly passed away in March, aged 90.

Dolly began supporting the Redmen when her favourite player, Phil Neal, was transferred from Northampton Town in 1974.
"When Phil left the Cobblers, he was such a natural player and down-to-earth bloke, that I couldn't let him go” (from an Echo article by Luke Traynor 14/03/2006).

She founded and Chaired the Northampton and Milton Keynes supporters’ branch, as a way of providing a cheap and convenient way for fans to get tickets and to travel to the matches and back.
For instance, my coach fare for Sunday’s match v West Brom, cost £17 return – a bargain, I think you’ll agree.
The same journey would cost me around £40 in petrol.

Dolly witnessed many of Liverpool’s greatest triumphs, including Istanbul, which she watched on her 65th wedding anniversary.
Her son-in law Peter Lomasney said: "It was also her’s and her husband Herbert's 65th wedding anniversary, and she had got a card from Rafa Benitez.
So it was the best of all worlds” (quote from article on Dolly by Nick Spoors of the Northampton Chronicle and Echo 10/03/10).

Dolly was featured on Football Focus once, and her passion won her the Barclays fan of the Month
Award in 2006.
Her hero, Phil Neal presented her with this honour, so I imagine that not even rain could have dampened the smile on her face hat day.
Her fame extended to the players, who would regularly greet her before games, a she sat in her seat behind the dug-out.

Dolly’s pride and passion can be summed up in these two sentences (both from an Echo article by Luke Traynor 14/03/06) : “I love the people of Liverpool and love the passion of the supporters.
My heart has been at Anfield for the past 30 years”.

This is a BBC Radio Northampton feature on Dolly by Geoff Doyle (24/05/07), on her 86th birthday : http://www.bbc.co.uk/northamptonshir..._feature.shtml
When this article appears, click on the "Hear the interview with Reds fan Dolly Wallinger" Real Player link at the bottom.

I would like to leave the last word to someone who knew Dolly better than me – Simon Gilby.
Simon has now taken over many of the responsibilities that Dolly performed for the supporters club.

When I first joined the Northampton and Milton Keynes supporters club way back in 1983, Dolly was the first person when I got on the coach, who came over and introduced herself to me.

Straight away, she made me feel like one of the family and it was like she had known me for years. That was Dolly all over.
It didn't matter if you had been going 27 years or it was your first trip up to Anfield with the club, she always made you feel so welcome.

Some of the happiest times travelling with Dolly were going over to the European Cup Finals like in Rome, where it was a laugh a minute going through these different countries and seeing all the different cultures, and food that they ate!

One of Dolly’s proudest moments was when she was voted 'Barclays Fan of the Month' in February 2006, and the Match of the Day 2 cameras followed her for the day as we travelled up on the coach to the Charlton Athletic game.
She was interviewed by their roving reporter Kevin Day.

What Dolly did not know however, was that the BBC had arranged for her hero and former player Phil Neal, to present her with her trophy.
The look on her face when he came into the room was priceless.

Everybody that has met Dolly, all came to the same conclusion - she was one of the nicest people in the world and they had got a friend for life.
The heart and soul of the supporters club has gone with Dolly’s sad passing, and it will never be the same again.
We all miss her terribly as she was an LFC legend.

YNWA
Simon Gilby

Why is our new manager receiving criticism after his 3rd PL match?

I've been reading the West Brom in-match and post-match threads today.

Let me understand/confirm what some of you have said...

"It's worrying that our manager praises players, like Gerrard, Torres and some of his own signings."

Many who have managed people (sports employees or any workplace team members) and subscribe to motivational theory and positive reinforecement, would question the merit of your criticism.

I also read a few critical comments about Roy's "body language", his actions or inactions today. And comments such as "he didn't get up off of that bench to go direct the players".

It only feels like yesterday that many on TIA, and other sites, were questioning Rafa's style of "over-managing" or "micro-managing" our players. He "didn't let them be". He didn't allow them to just exercise their "creativity".

Some of you must be really tough managers to work for, and maybe you believe that you needn't allow your new team a substantial amount of time to "gel" together.

Isn't it a bit premature to do so in the 3rd PL match of a new coach?

Should we wait for the end of Roy's first season to pass judgement?

Especially since we have this other little problem to deal with? Yes, I'm referring to the worst possible problem for any organization to have: A questionable and anything but effective leadership and ownership structure.
