Can Luis Suarez Win Player of the Year?

We love him. Other fans hate him. The press are split on him.

But there is no doubting the boy from Salto is a genuine world class talent.

Much was made of his abilities when he came to us from Ajax on deadline day in January 2011. We all saw he was something special, but many questioned whether he would ever score the goals his talent suggested he should.

15oulxd.jpg
Luis Suarez's Stats

As the above stats show, Luis has got better year on year since he’s been with us.

This season, Luis been outstanding & his 18 Premier League goals clearly show this is his best season at Liverpool & there’s room for it to get even better.

But over at the Theatre of Screams, they have a certain player on their books called Robin van Persie who’s form this season as well as last has also been outstanding. This season so far RVP has scored 19 Premier League goals.

Also Swansea City’s bargain of the decade Michu has also displayed class notching up a total of 15 Premier League goals so far.

But the two that get the most attention are Suarez & van Persie – mainly because of the clubs they’re at & what the goals mean to each team.

With van Persie, Manchester United are sadly marching on to towards the league at a frightening pace. Sure; it doesn’t help that City have been crap, but unless there is a massive collapse, the title will be headed over to the red side of Manchester & that will mainly be because of one man – RvP.

Then you have Luis. Liverpool, under new management this season are yet again in a season of transition. Since Brendan’s arrival, there has been a massive turnaround of players & staff – both incoming/outgoing & due to the team trying to find itself under Brendan’s guidance, the results have been anything but consistent. But Luis has been. He has scored a total of 23 goals so far & without those goals, good God only knows where Liverpool would be right now.

66dd0y.jpg

So who has performed the more remarkably?

A player who at Man United has chances put on a plate for him? A player who is surrounded with quality players? And a player who is performing in a steady & consistent environment week in week out?

Or a player at Liverpool who has seen mass change in the team; A player who has been much of the time unfairly lambasted by the media & has had the opposition fans massively against him? A player who has had to create most of the chances he scored from himself? And let’s be honest, a player who has performed at a world class level in a team that hasn’t been?

Both players have been & continue to be superb, but for my money & most will be unsurprised by this – Luis Suarez, if he continues in the same vein as he has should win the Player of the Year award. I feel his performance has been the more remarkable.

But What Do The Press & Pundits Think?

Fat fuck Martin Samuel said of Suarez:

2ry6m90.jpg

"Yet, imagine if he was the Footballer of the Year. There would be uproar, protests, arguments, quite probably resignations. A breakaway black union without doubt, if he won the PFA vote, a very awkward few weeks for representatives of the media if he topped any poll of journalists."

http://www.dailymail...uel-column.html

Tony Evans said of Luis:

35a42lc.jpg

"This is not Ian Callaghan. Suárez is obnoxious. He bites people, he handles on the line in crucial World Cup games, he is a horrible, niggly cheat."

http://www.thetimes....icle3317728.ece

Kevin Keegan on Luis:

rm5pc6.jpg

“You have to take away the diving and the racism. But if he doesn’t win it, that will be a major player in it. You have to say rightly or wrongly: Do you want the player of the year to be the best player, or the best player slash role model?”

http://www.mirror.co...-suarez-1516939

Kevin Keegan on RvP:

rm5pc6.jpg

“It's not very easy to make a move from Arsenal to Manchester United. But Van Persie has been in the Premier League a fair few years. He was top scorer last year, he knows all the players and he knows what life is like, whether it be Manchester of London. They are big advantages."

http://www.mirror.co...-suarez-1516939

John Barnes on Luis:

eug83l.jpg

“Although Van Persie may score more goals, from my point of view Suarez would be my player of the year because of what he has done individually. My favourite player in the world - and I would bow down and kiss his feet - is Diego Maradona, and I say forget about whatever your moral standpoint is. From a footballing perspective, it’s Suarez every time for me in terms of what he has actually done. Playing for a bad team or a good team, for Liverpool or Uruguay - he will do it.”

http://www.mirror.co...-suarez-1516939

Martin Keown thinks Rvp shades it:

ofc9cn.jpg

“There is a long way to go but what we can say now is that his goals are having a major say in the title and who is going to win it. But for me, Van Persie is playing with a hunger and drive, almost like on a personal crusade. He’s giving Manchester United a different dimension. If you took him out of the team now I don’t think they would be seven points clear.”

http://www.mirror.co...-suarez-1516939

Robbie Fowler on Suarez & RvP

28b9sv5.jpg

"Robin van Persie, Luis Suarez and Michu have been the three best players. If they keep up their form it will very interesting to see who wins it at the end of the season. It's very hard to compare Van Persie and Suarez because they are different players. Van Persie is probably more of a set striker, where he will be doing all his work around the final third. Suarez has got the ability to drop anywhere and create chances as well as score them.”

http://www.bbc.co.uk...otball/20987252

Brian Reade says ‘Suarez v RvP should be about 'football, not character’

5uqz5z.jpg

English football has decided he’s a Joey Barton-scale scumbag, and won’t rest until he plies his trade elsewhere. Presumably it’s just the accepted wisdom that Suarez isn’t a very nice character, so it’s best to rule him out on “role model” grounds.

In which case how did Eric Cantona (kung-fu fan-kicker), Jack Charlton (Black Book score-settler), Roy Keane (self-confessed kneecapper), George Best (alcoholic womaniser), Pat Jennings (gambling addict), Wayne Rooney (prostitute-user) and Kevin Keegan (criminal perm-wearer) ever win the award?

When it comes to deciding a season’s finest footballer we should leave loaded moral judgements to the Mary Whitehouse brigade and go with the one who has consistently drawn gasps of admiration from the paying public. The only two candidates are leading their respective lines at Old Trafford tomorrow. May the best genius win.”

http://www.mirror.co...bin-van-1530366

So there you have a flavour.

Most of us will probably think that Luis could & should win the player of the year award.

But what do you think?

Will he win it or are the obstacles in his way just too big?

YNWA

There is no way they will let him win it. Not if he scored 50 goals. He is public enemy #1.

If it were based purely on football then it is all to play, for you can make a case for any of them. But even when the press compliment luis they still bring up biting, handballing, racist, diving cheat in the same article. When do you ever read about him with out a negative comment?

I think next season he will be even better again with the support of Daniel Sturridge and Coutinho. He actually has players around him that are approaching his level, or have the potential to reach his level, and the partnership with Sturridge, even this early looks frightening.

I think that playing with better players, and enjoying his football more will have a massive impact on getting rid of the dark sides of his game. He is a win at all cost kind of guy, a born fighter and winner. He has been fighting a lone cause for most of his time here, and at times resorted to looking for cheap free kicks and penalties. But, the witch hunt that surrounds him is way out of proportion. There are several players in the league as bad or worse in some cases at going down softly, but they don't get treated anything like luis. They don't come with the extra baggage. Ashley young is neck and neck with Gareth Bale as the biggest divers in he league. Where is the frenzy everytime they go down softly? Bale is getting noticed more, but he is not treated anything like luis.

I think next season, if he keeps clear of controvosy, and maintains or improves on his performance levels he can win it, yes. He can still improve his finishing a number of levels, he is still very wasteful.

For me there are five candidates:

Van Persie, Suarez, Michu, Bale & Zabaleta. Any of which would be a deserving winner but I don't believe that Suarez has the support outside of Liverpool to win the award.

You listen to match day commentators and you get a sense of the true perception of Luis Suarez. Its always a compliment followed with if only he could ...

I personally believe that Van Persie is the player of the season but Suarez would probably be odds if it were based solely on football

Wilshere above Zabaleta for me.

Anyway answering the question, I'll keep it brief.

Should he win it? - Absolutely.

Can and/or will he win it? - Absolutely not.

He's a Manc but RVP is one hell of a player. As is Suarez. If Suarez loses, it'll be to a worthy player. I'd pick Suarez for his all around game but that's just me.

If united win the title which is looking likely it'll be down to RVP's goals hence giving him the trophy.

Unless things dramatically change in the last ten or so games of the season, it should really only be between Suarez and RVP. Michu, Mata, and perhaps Bale (if he continues his form and helps Spurs achieve a top 4 spot) are honorable mentions but shouldn't be considered as serious contenders.

RVP is most likely going to win it simply by virtue of how much he has helped United's quest to regain the title. Everyone will be talking about that. Suarez has had the season of his life in a red shirt but he won't get the plaudits he deserved because of (1) all the bad press and nonsensical talk about how he is a bad role model, and because of (2) our incredibly disappointing season overall.

It's hard to argue with (2) because for all the massive difference Suarez has made in our team, most of it has gone to naught and we've failed to improve much if any at all in terms of achievements compared to last season, but (1) is just hypocritical nonsense churned out and repeated mindlessly by the press. RVP is far from a saint. He's dived, kicked out and intentionally put in many dirty tackles throughout his career.

Would love for Luis to win it, and I feel like he deserves it as much as RVP if not more, but there's only going to be one winner and it's not gonna be Luis. Hoping we'll see Luis win it next season and many more seasons after that.

Suarez can win the Ballon D'or someday especially if he puts away his 'easier' chances let alone the EPL player of the year.

Funny enough he has a better chance to win the ballon D'or then winning the EPL player of the year cause of the grip United have over the league and fegiescum and Evra the cunt have done a fantastic job to discredit and drag his name through the shitter..

From unbiased POV, and have to say both of them could win Player of The Year. Equal in term of scoring (mind you RVP scored a penalty). Suarez more on improving the whole team with brilliant plays and joy to watch, while RVP know for those last minute tap in that gonna give the scum tittle. Well not like it didn't happen before, as last year it could be Gigg, Park, Chicharito, Rooney, Valencia , etc. But this season it's all RVP

And from biased view? no way in hell Luis will win it. I don't think he will win even if he scores 50 goals a season.

A real pity through, as Luis got that 10 goals benchmark first. But with United playing QPR and then Norwich next, before our Wigan game, RVP gonna get that 20 goals benchmark. Unless he's out of the team, in terrible forms, or even better: injured

Two reasons why he won't win it. The opinion of dicks like Martin Samuel and the press who have the knives out for him that care more about something that happened in another league in November 2010, a handball in a world cup two years two and a half years ago and the incident with Evra that they all said they wanted dealt with and putting to bed but can't help to refer to it every opportunity they get.

Also RVP's goals look likely to be the difference between United dropping short last year and winning the title this.

I feel it will be RVP, Michu and Bale as he is the media darling despite his diving. Too many that are voting will feel like they are taking the moral high ground by voting anyone but Luis unfortunately.

My thinking to. He could and maybe should but RVP will get it, then Michu probably followed by Bale.

Our fella just isn't politically correct enough but who gives a fuck as long as he keeps hitting the back of the net for us? That's all i care about.

He has a chance to win the golden boot. I doubt whether the uneducated British media and the so called hypocritical pundits would vote for him. At this moment, he is probably the 3rd best player in the world, only behind messi and ronaldo.

Would love him to win the golden boot , that would be a kick in the sac for the media.

Simple - not a chance due to image. i assume the press vote for this?

It seems player of the year is always the top scorers. Yes I am a bitter ex defender.

But I think Michu has genuine claims. Fuck rvp

RVP will win in on the fact that he has put his life at risk this season. I mean that life threatening ball hitting him in the head. We all feared that his head was going to come off and Michu was going to smash it into the net.

I have to echo the thoughts of Kwala.

Even though, at the moment, Suarez is playing better football and is playing amongst lesser quality players in comparison to RVP who simply moves well and scores the goals from quality passes to him, RVP will walk away with it.

Unfortunately Suarez will always have the media at his back. Keegans comment about racism is absurd. It should be about football only.

All players carry conteversy, as listed in the article. Lets not forget that RVP was in court on sexual abuse charges on a child a few years ago.

Suarez is worthy of it, but we are all stupid if we think he'll get it. Every non-LFC supporter hates his guts.

It'll be RVP, Michu and Bale that get the top three. but Suarez should at least come second. If he's not in the team of the season I will be appalled.

I'm surprised he's not been injured yet considering how little he played for Arse for a long time...

I voted No, Suarez should be in with a shout however - he's not wearing the right red shirt and, in addition, the press are biased towards him. He's not racist, he only hates Mancs...everyone knows that.

Luis will definitely be among the nominees, but he won't win it. No way. Not unless the other nominees are found guilty of rape and murder. Even then they probably would find a way around him winning it. Too much politics involved in these awards; it lost all credibility the year Giggs won it after having played only15-20 games.

Bale is obviously everyones favourite pet and I think they're dying to give him the award, but it will be hard for them to justify it if Van Persie continues to score and ManU do the double.

He can win it, but it depends as much on RVP and Michu having a poor second half as it depends on him have a great second half.  If he can end the season clearly dominating the leader board, they'll have no choice but to give it to him.  RVP on the other hand just needs to keep up and he'll win it.
