I don't care about the team making a profit. I care about the fact that in Rafa's time here, he has done better in terms of league postion, CL performances and trophies won than Wenger has done in the same period.
You may be right that Wenger's use of funds appears better than Rafa's, but it's almost impossible to compare apples to apples. That said, no two manager's are the same, so when I compare Wenger and Rafa, I'm not very interested in merely comparing their transfer records in a vaccuum. I'm only interested in their transfer records as part of assessing how good a job they are doing (which is what most people are trying to do - to imply Rafa isn't doing as good a job as Wenger is because of their comparitive transfer dealings). To which the fact remains, despite a 7 year headstart, and a team of invincibles with lots of great talent at his disposal, Wenger took Arsenal into a self-induced nose-dive, and Rafa has outperformed him despite having to rebuild the team from scratch because of Houllier's dross.
To me, what's interesting is comparing how a good a job one manager is doing vs another. And to that effect, performance in the transfer market is only one feature of a manager's job. If Wenger was a scout, he'd be the best damn scout out there. But that's not his job. His job is to create a winning team. And despite a 7 year headstart, Rafa has outperformed him.
If I were to compare Rafa to Fergie, then I'd have to factor in both time and money, which Fergie has had more of both. More money partly because of being at a richer club in the early 90s (as evidenced by the number of times he has broken the transfer record - Rafa hasn't come near it - and that's what shows relative spending, not raw numbers), and more money because of more time to make profits from his own buys (which Rafa has been doing most of the time, making a profit in total when you consider his sales of players he bought - consider Crouch, Xabi, Bellamy, Sissoko etc, who more than offset the occasional flop).
But that's a whole other debate that's been done elsewhere a few times, with people agreeing to disagree...
Did my eyes deceive me yesterday or did I read that 'arry at spurs has had £150 million to spend in 18 months, with a net spend of £50 odd million !!!!!! Does that put thing's into perspective when in the same time Rafa has a net spend of about £1 million and wonder why they are aiming to be part of the top four, city, villa and sunderland have all spent far more than us and strangely enough they are now the ones banging on the door. Doesn't make any sense does it!?
Correct Wozza, also nearly bankrupt Pompey. Good ole arry eh top 6 finish every season spending 50m donzas and he's gods gift, then there was the fortune Jol, Comoli and Ramos flashed generally on dross. If Rafa doesn't spend his 1m well there's hell on in the press.
