I know, right? I was angry at Rafa for buying Alonso and Garcia amongst others, from Spain, coincidentally where he's from.....

I read somewhere that Matip and Klavan made the the most blocks in Germany last season.

    Experienced cover. A good signing,

Once Gomez is fit I can see him going out on loan now.

It's possible, but following his injuries I think the club will want to manage his rehabilitation very, very carefully and so I think will want to keep him at Melwood for the time being. Also, last season at CB we had Lovren, Skrtel, Sakho and Toure and still needed to bring in another on loan (while Lucas was also drafted into several games at CB) due to injury problems, so I also wouldn't be surprised if Klopp sees 5 CBs as the optimal number to cover the two positions.

I don't see that happening personally.

5 CB's is about right for what we want in the squad, and the fact he's coming off a lengthy layoff, and Klopps not a fan of loans, to be suggests he'd stay.

Wisdom and Illori are done at LFC now if we bring Klavan in.

No chance. Klopp really rates him and as said will want to oversee his recovery.

We have less games this season and without european football we have more time between matches for recuperation so it could be possible.

One downside with Kolo is his lack of pace as he is getting older. Klavan at 30 years for 4.5 million deal is a good deal and i dont think his wages will be on the higher side.

If Matip wants to play for Cameroon again he would possible play the African Cup in January? I think Gomez is needed then.

Reading the posts on his injury, Gomez should, if he does not get another one, be ready by January. But it seems that we will be getting another CB also so more time to recovery fully for both Sakho and Gomez. But also pressure, of a good kind, in the competition for the starting 11.

I was reminded how fickle I can be when I recalled that match thread. I had been feeling like this was a 'settle for' sort of transfer, when I realized that in watching that match, I had compared Skrtel to him unfavourably - wondering why if a mid-table BL side could find solid defenders who did not panic on the ball why we could not manage it. At the time, I even wrote 'how much could this Klavan guy cost? Pathetic'.

Not delighted with this transfer, but it is what it is, he is reliable, experienced, gives us solid depth at the position.

Happy with a transfer like this,

Yes we don't have european football but competition for places breeds better results. Ragnar seems like one of those solid guys who could play for good sides in many European leagues. He's better and has more accomplishments than Kyriakos and a player like that would have been handy during the defensive crisis of late 2015 to early 2016.

Don't see that at all,a couple of injuries and we have no cover, and they will happen.
We all hope they won't but they do.
Think Gomez once fit will play a bit.

Loans now have to go from window through window, and as Gomez will not be fit in time for this window to close I would seriously doubt that he will be going anywhere.

I think Morgan and Huth are testament to what a non-nonsense defender can achieve, and Klavan represents a sensible, older statesman purchase akin to Morgan/Huth.

We have spend the thick end of £40M on Gomez, Lovren and Sakho, got Matip for free. Klavan is a sensible move for sure. He may even end up the No.1!

Agreed, I also know nothing of him, so am just guessing he is something similar to Kolo. Anyway, this one's just for squad depth and nothing else IMO.

Yep. Last winter we could see what happens if many CB's are injuried. There were many issues because of not enough CB's.

Not really. Bigger issue was our lack of firepower and our fullbacks being picked off at set pieces.

Whilst I agree with you regarding bigger issues, this move just solves another of the list of issues we have. Mane also solves some of the firepower as does the return to fitness of Studge and Ings. Leftback....still a problem.

We lacked height and physicality at the back for set pieces and a GK capable of commanding his area. That and a LB who got caught out of position far too frequently. In addition there was no protection of the back four in midfield. Klopp has already addressed some of these issues with just a quality LB and CDM required to finish the job.

I think we can't compare player on different league, too much difference and biased.
