I've watched a lot of this lad this year and all I can say is that he needs to be signed ASAP.

We need to get a bid in now, before the summer coz next year he will be in
The premier league no doubt and I don't mean for a team outside of
    The top6 either.

Ps - if we sign him he is more than capable of starting

This is one of those where I'd love us to sign him, but only if we send him back to Fulham for a couple of years. If we bring him in now, I think we ring him in and stick him in the reserves we'll stall his development.

So this is now the real LB thread

As long as he wants to join us it seems a done deal and we dont have to deal with the club just sign him to a professional contract, I guess he will still cost close to 10m in compensation though

That leaves more fund for Suarez and Koke

You only have to look at the Delle Alli decision not to pay the asking price
And see what we have missed. All transfers are a gamble it still not as bad as letting one of our academy player go and having to pay 89M for him a few years later haha

If he is would we be allowed to approach him?
And aren't we banned from academy transfers for a while?
I can't remember the details, but there was something.

He cannot be under any kind of professional contract if he is under 17 years of age. So what is that supposed to mean?

From the stories it seems he is under an academy contract with Fulham that isn't expiring so we need to agree a fee with them. He will be over 17 though and eligible to sign a professional contract with us and therefore not effected by the ban.

But with Comolli there was always at least three months of small incremental rises in offer, before he'd blow his wad with a ludicrous amount.

    "How much for player x?"
"You can have him for £10m."
"I see. We will offer... £1m."
    "Really? No, it's still £10m I'm afraid."
    "How about £1.5m?"
    "Nope. Still £10m."
    "£2m."
    "£10m."
    "Did I offer £1m already?"
    "Yep. Still nope. £10m."
    "Sod it then... £20m!"
    "N... wait, really? Sure!"
"Another win for Comolli! I rule!"

From the BBC goss page. Seems Fulham are playing hard to get:

Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic says 16-year-old left-back Ryan Sessegnon will not be sold this summer, despite interest from Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City. (Metro)

The metro are even less trustworthy than Rodgers and we all know how bad Rodgers is.

Like a championship club can realistically expect to hold onto a player wanted by those clubs. Good luck lad.

Here we go again, smells of Chillwell all over again.

I was under the impression we didnt need to agree a deal with Fulham as this would be his first professional contract but he has an academy contract that still has time to run.

As I said earlier in the week if you try and do business with clubs who do not want to sell its painful, long drawn out and very difficult and like Chilwell you rarely end up signing the player anyway.

This seems one of those to me, no need for the club to come out and say he wont be sold if thats not the policy of the club.

By the sounds of it VVD and Sessegnon are the top targets in defense. If signed that would leave the back 4 for 2017/18 as:

    Clyne --- Matip -- VVD ---- Milner
Trent --- Lovren Klavan - Sessegnon
    ----------- Gomez

I get that Sessegnon is a top talent but surely this is placing a lot of faith in two teenagers, when having a balance along the lines of this would be more sensible ideally:

    Clyne ---------------- Experienced LB
    Trent ---------------- Milner (covering RB/LB)

Needless to say the above option feels a bit light at fullbacks still given that the team would (hopefully) have midweek CL games, and the only change at fullback is Moreno --> Sessegnon.

I admit that I haven't watched Sessegnon beyond a few YT videos so perhaps he's more "ready" than I give him credit for.

    Thoughts?

Milner's not going to want to stick around if he is not playing regularly. Secondly, we are going to struggle to attract young players like Sessegnon if we put too many players ahead of them in the squad. Saying that, for all we know there may be other players lined up who play LB.

    Clyne and Milner rarely miss games. I'd say pecking order will be;

    RB; Clyne, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez
    LB; Milner, Clyne, Sessegnon

He might not, but I think he lacks the bargaining chips to do anything about it. The contract he signed with us was really the last one that could really dictate. He's never again going to get remotely the sort of money that his last contract negotiations gave him, so I think that whether he likes it or not, he gets used how we want to use him for the remainder of his contract and then move on.

Clyne and Milner are as dependable as they come, but injuries do happen, especially to players aged 32 and over.

    Hypothetically
speaking, if we make it to the knockouts of the CL, and one of Clyne or Milner is injured, that leaves us depending on 19 year old Trent or 17 year old Sessegnon in a massive European game (or series of games). Is that really sensible?

If Trent gets put into team for run of 5-10 games next year I wouldn't blink an eye at all. Think he'd do well. If both full backs get injured, make do with what you got. I'd rather have depth at every other position before we start going to 3 full backs deep per side. We need someone on left side as cover, and buying what people think is the next best thing to understudy the rock solid reliable milner works fine for me

If you want to have and develop the best young players you can't be scared of them playing football.

Is it sensible? Probably not. Is the payoff high if it works? Massively so. Giving Trent that kind of responsibility could be the making of him, which would be fantastic for a number of reasons.

I'd certainly rather go into the season with Trent and Sessegnon than imitations of Vignal and Josemi anyway that's for sure.

@rickardinho1 @ILLOK Keep in mind we still have the scouse Cafu out on loan this year who *should* be around next season...if we do end up in CL he can do the business on both sides of the pitch if required.

We also have the completely untried Juanma at LB. A product of Barcelona's academy, 20 years old, played for Spain at all youth levels up to U.19. We chose to sign him up after a trial, so I suppose someone thought he has some ability. So with him and Flannagan, and the new kid on the block whoever that may be, I think we're well sorted for full backs.

True, and his preference was to stay in the North, so his options for clubs paying similar to us and not requiring him to uproot his family is limited, if they exist at all. I just dont know if Klopp would want to keep him around if he is going to publically comment on not liking the LB role more and more.

Scouse Cafu's legs have gone. I very much doubt he will be around if the club can shift him.
