Here we sit in 3rd place while in good form having gone 5-2-0 in the last 7, with a good opportunity to finish 3rd and in great position to finish 4th, and what do i read? that we "have a good chance of finishing 5th". I think United fans would be more optimistic about Liverpool finishing 4th than our own fans. Where's the "i think i'm going to throw up" smiley?

Im not sure what id prefer in the Man City vs Manu game either.

The safe option would be a Man City win to grind Manu into the dirt and put them a full game behind. Or a draw to trip both teams up brings Man City into the fray in terms of slipping up.

Then we would only need to match Manu or Man City game for game. That might hedge our bets a bit more.

As long as Utd miss out and Ibra therefore walks (their top goal scorer by some margin, lets not forget) then I'll be happy.

I hope they draw 0-0, Aguero pulls his hammy, Ibra gets sent off for laughing at Aguero, Sterling gets a red for simulation, Jesus twists his ankle warming up, Sane and De Bruyne get into a fight over a hair product and both walk off the pitch, De Gea throws his gloves in disgust at Mou, who has just swiped the double stacked burger from Shaw's lips, so Shaw smashes Mou across the face with a giant toffee apple.

Pogba is fine though, he can play as many minutes as possible.

Ibra is obviously still good, but imo it's better for us if he stays. While still a great finisher i do think he holds them back a bit as he's fairly slow and not as mobile and without him they can put a faster, more agile team on the field.

I'll wait til after the Burnley game to decide what i'd prefer in the City/United game. I think there's a decent chance United drops points on Sunday having just played on Thursday.

That isn't astronomically accurate. If you aim for the moon and miss, you'll end up drifting in deep space for thousands of years. The nearest stars you can land amongst are the Alpha Centauri system and they are 4.2 light years away.

I'd take it, we aren't a million light years away from a title after all.

Aim for the sky and you might reach the ceiling as Shanks once said

Before the Sunderland game we were averaging 2.28 points per game and after the Hull game till now we are averaging 2.2 points per game.

We continue with that till the end of the season we have 77 points

Arsenal would have to win all their games to overtake us and Utd could only afford to draw two game to equal us. and they play City and most importantly Arsenal.

Win our next game then I am 100% convinced we will make it

I agree in essence with your sober appraisal and we obviously shared pre-season scepticism about a placing higher than 6th. I'll be very happy, like you, to be proven wrong

If we hit 75 points I believe we cinch top 4. Right now with 5 games to go with sit at 66 points.

Our closet rivals to kick us out of the top 4 are Manchester City 64 points, Manchester United with 60 points, Arsenal 57, Everton 57. We need to finish ahead of at least 3 of those 4 teams.

If we win 4 of our last 5, I believe that we are in. 78 points will be tough going for them to catch up. We can do this! Liverpool just needs to lock in. We control our own destiny here which is important. Don't need luck of other teams. We win 4 of 5 and we're into the Champions League!!

Your point is valid. I'll amend to say that 75 should do the trick. But I like a margin of safety. :-)
Some of our competitors for top 4 do have a couple of games in hand on us. Although they are doing the chasing, it would be much more stress free for you and me if Liverpool won 4 of their last 5. Agreed? :well done:

Even 75 points is a total that is a historically high requirement to beat the 5th placed team. It's rare for the team in 5th to even get 70 points.

I agree that 75 appears to be high, historically speaking. But this year is unusual because at the moment there are currently 6 teams who in theory could all hit the 75 point mark if they won out, Our main threats being Man City, Man United, and Arsenal.

I feel our chances are strong and I'm happy that Liverpool controls their own destiny. But winning 4 out of 5 on the run in would make our top 4 finish extra secure.

I think 4th, 5th and 6th would probably be separated by 5 points this season. I do believe 6th spot would get 70 points this season and that's how close these 6 clubs are this season and the season to come till Spurs lose Pochettino.

If we win our next 2 games I think we will seal it.

The last 6 points we got, away to Stoke, away to West Brom, are like gold dust. Because we were 7 games to play with 4 of those away.

Now were down to 5 to play with 3 of those at home.

If we beat Palace at home and Watford away that leaves us with.

    Southampton (H)
    West Ham (A)
    Middlesbrough (H)

I think we can watch other results and well have enough in the tank to be able to turn the screw if necessary for these last 3 games, in particular the 2 home games.

Palace may well be the only one left with 'something to play for'

This for me is a huge advantage over our rivals.

I predicted we would finish on 77 points, so 3 wins, 2 draws and am sticking by it.

Fuck the rest of em, ol' big ears is welcoming back an old friend next season.

There is a strong possibility you are right. However, it will be interesting to see how they manage the fixture congestion they each have, and in Utd and Arsenal's case the need to win these games, if we beat Palace, as Arsenal dont play their next league game until after we play Palace and we could be 12 points ahead of them by the time they play Leicester. With them then playing Spurs just a few days later.

Interestingly, if we fail to beat Palace (or if Utd have a rampant week), as Utd have 3 league games before we play again on 1 May, they could be in 3rd place by the time we play Arsenal. So this weekends game against Palace is probably bigger for us psychologically than i first thought. Win that and the pressure on both City and Utd next thursday will be pretty intense.

Yeah, I think that is pretty fair. I think there is a big difference in psychology in winning your last 7 games to earn the CL qualification when you start off in one of those spots compared to if you're playing catch up. Even more so to a side who arent dropping many points.
