If you look at that team that beat Bilbao in the final, other than Simeone himself, they only have about 4 of those player left. It's been a text book case of year by year evolution.

It counts for a lot. I always think if you carbon copied the teams over the past few years from the likes of Arsenal or Man City and had them playing under the banner of Liverpool under the same setup, we would have done far better in Europe than they have been doing.

Last year we finished 8th in the league our form wasnt great but our European pedigree forced us to the final.

Those European nights vs Dortmund and Villareal at Anfield saw us through.

Would be happy with the Sevilla model, would that be the same as Atletico? Building the season around winning the EL? year on year.

But let's not sell our best players off after each final win.

Rojo went off injured in first half too. Could they be picking up injuries just as they run into congested fixture list.

Looks like he could be done for the season, and if it's a serious as looked not the kind of injury you want at 35. Big blow for United.

Queue Rashford continuing his form there and Keane suddenly falling asleep in his six-yard box... If Burnley play the way they did against Tottenham, they need not bother coming.

Perfect. Arsenal have a week's rest before the Utd game so will be fired up and should tire Utd out at least :-)

As long as Utd dont have a big lead from the first leg and are forced to play their best players in the second leg, it should give spurs a bigger advantage. They are both away games too, So ones Mourinho would usually play for the draw i think - but will he be in a position to do so in those games? Or will he need to push for the win?

Werent Spurs at home that game? Burnley are a much better side at home. Think they have pushed all the top teams at their own ground this season.

European competition has never been easy for them. They are a failure in Europe in all its competitions, considering their "standing" in world football, how many times they've won the domestic league and how often they've played in Europe overall.

leaves thread while singing "we won it five times"....

Probably, but given the choice of having to win maybe 6 out of the remaining 7 Premier League games to qualify, 3 of which are away to Man City , Arsenal and Tottenham vs 3 Europa league games against either Lyon, Celta Vigo or Ajax, if it was me id say the Europa League route is the easier of the 2 options for them now.

Even the absolute best teams have really struggled at Turf Moor this year...

    Glory Glory Man United!

In terms of putting obstacles in front of them for top 4 finish in the league, this result was as good as it gets:

    * An extra 30 mins of football on their legs
    * 2 injuries
    * Still go to the next round cramping up their schedule and possibly focus outside of the league

No. Spurs have done the double on Burnley. @Nikola is right. While Burnley have been very good at home, their home game against Spurs was a bit of a no contest. Dier and Son scored in a relatively straightforward 0-2 win for the spuds.

One can only hope that Burnley don't roll over and die simply because its United in town.

    Burnley at home this season: 10W - 2D - 4L, conceded just 14 goals in 16.

    Liverpool ..... W 2-0
    Arsenal ........ L 0-1 (last minute goal)
    Everton ........ W 2-1
    City ............... L 1-2
    Southampton W 1-0
    Leicester ...... W 1-0
    Stoke ............ W 1-0
    Spurs ............ L 0-2

In away's against top sides they've also kept things pretty tight, except against Chelsea:
    Chelsea L 0-3
    United... D 0-0
    Spurs .. L 1-2
    City ...... L 1-2
    Arsenal L 1-2
    Liverpool L 1-2

An early Sunday kickoff for a scrappy affair with an energetic Burnley side - after being taken to extra-time on Thursday night, is a very tricky fixture, and United won't be able to count on Zlatan to bail them out.

Spurs are unbeaten at home this season so far - hopefully that will continue.
I think Utd will beat Arsenal though.
If we beat Palace then I think the best scenario for us is if Utd draw with City as it will help us hold onto 3rd place whilst also helping to distance us from Utd.

This plus Celta Vigo and Lyon got through so they will have a tough semi whoever they play.

At some point there run has to come to an end and its how they react when it does

United at home is a massive game for Burnley. This isn't like any normal game for them, it's a local derby and they will be out for bragging rights

If we are talking about the mist recent game, then I don't think it was as straight forward as you say. They were struggling in the first half, and Spurs were forced to make changes in the second which led to them to take control and win the game.

Saw that Mourinho was calling for Jones and Smalling to play through their injuries now that rojo is injured. That can't be good for them.
