So what should be done so get better referees? To stop them taking the easy way out?

IMO they need to start to suspend and later replace referees. They need to replace Riley and get in a foreigner instead. Someone that start from scratch and don't protect a referee because he is a friend. Someone that have the balls to suspend referees.

Mentioned this before but electronic tags around the neck would work, have someone in a room watching replays and when the ref is wrong you simply zap the cunt from said room to indicate the wrong decision has been made, when recovered he can be told what the decision should be and reminded not to be such a blind bastard.:-)

Wrapping the tags around the nads would prove more of an incentive I reckon ;-)

This weekend is yet another display that if you want refs to punish serious foul play you have to play act. Can did not react at all to the Williams stamp/rake, just like his lack of reaction possibly saved Yaya in the last game. Meanwhile over at OT, Felliani did the text book red cardable "headbut", but Yacob stood his ground and nothing happened. I hate that those are typically seen as a red and called a "headbutt", but if Jacob had have gone down then it would have been a red, no doubt. Yet we complain when players look for opportunities to go down.

    :well done:

The referees are so shit that the players must play act so I agree with you. It is a managers job to earn as many points as possible for his club so he must more or less instruct his players to play act. It could cost him his job if he don't.

Use video evidence after the games. Even if a player got a yellow he should be suspended if it is a clear cut red card. At least a three game ban and suspended the next time he play against the same team.

Players are human, they make mistakes and so do the referees. It is time for the FA to find out that the referees are human beings and not some sort of aliens that never make mistakes.

Retrospective viedo replay does little to address the balance in the game though. I had my heart in my mouth when Can went in for that challenge, not least because it was a situation directly created by the ref. Allow lots of bad tackles to go, make other players feel forced to play the game in that spirit and then end sending someone else off for doing exactly that.

It does little to address the balance in the game. If you want to do that then you must use video evidence during the game but what must start to happen and that already next season is that referees get suspended if they are not good enough. If they continue being shit then they must be replaced.

The PL is right now being destroyed thanks to the shit referees. It isn't fun to watch player after player getting injured thanks to them. A big part of their job is to protect the players but as you say they don't do that. It isn't Klopp training that is the problem in our case. It is the shit referees and we are not the only club having that problem.

Henderson could maybe never play week in week out again thanks to a bad tackle and a shit ref. The referees are more important than any player out there. If they are shit then players get injured.

If you don't have good referees then the league can never be called top class.

Being held accountable for their decisions would be a start. The FA refuse to admit any wrongs and fine anyone who would speak out about it. Until the FA acknowledge the severe decline in refreeing standards over the past decade-ish nothing will be done.

An official by the goal, a la Europa League, would help a lot with penalty calls. Video technology needs to be intergrated into the game somehow, every other major sport uses it. Clearly defined guidelines would be much better as well. The amount of decisions that irk people because of ambiguity in the way a rule can be interpretted is quite high and a simple way to reduce that is to make the rules more well defined.

Saw that Carragher and Neville are doing some kind of show tonight at 7pm on Sky in which they are stepping into the shoes of a referee doing training with all the current PL refs. Could be an interesting insight into it and maybe make some more sympathetic towards the difficult job they have.

There are some good refs in this country but must cannot seem to cope in high pressure situations and lack consistency from week to week. Not always convinced they are being given a clear directive on certain issues they face most weeks.

I think it is time they become honest with themselves and realize that referees in their 30s and 40s for the most part can't keep up with the speed of the game of 22 professional athletes mostly in their 20s, over the full size of a pitch, even with three assistants.
These athletes are that much faster and the game has increased its pace over the Premier League era.

That is an issue for some refs, however I don't think it has a great deal to do with the relatively poor quality. That would explain poor offside calls on sudden counters, but how many times do you recall seeing a missed call where the asst ref is nominally in the ideal position to make the call. How many times do you see absolutely obvious fouls not called inside the box on set-pieces? Fitness or pace explains only a very small portion of errors and omissions.

Use video evidence during the games. They could easily start to use it next season without any problems at all.

A new head of referees. Riley stinks big time. Get in foreign referees. It is allowed. Every two footed tackle should be a red card then it wouldn't be a discussion if it is a red card or not when they use video evidence.

A shit ref could now cost a club £100m+.

If you want to be a PL referee then you should also accept that the FA can check your financial situation when they want to do it. Corruption is a big problem.

Fact is that it is so much easier to referee a match in front of a telly after 3 slow-mo replays..

The technology is there. Use it. It is 100% inevitable that it will come in...why wait?

I think the zapping tags round the nads is the way forward, managers, players, refs the whole bundle. Have me watching from a comfortable spot with a whole host of nuke um buttons in front of me and just see the entertainment value increase! :celebrating:

Dunno where to put this, so here will do.

I see Clattenburg is off to Saudi Arabia. My old man lived there for years.

I'm sure the money is great but the quality of life is literally non-existent.

You could stick that right up your arse...

Two atrocious decisions today, but they easily could have been stopped if replay was available as both were clear dives. Pretty obvious that they need help.

It is already being used successfully in Rugby it is a no brainer and like rugby we should have sin bins as well and if you're sin binned twice automatic red

A sin bin is a more fundamental change to the game - introducing video assistance for referees could be done with minimal changes. It is just some really backwards thinking at FIFA that has been holding it back, the idea that somehow the game should be universal or it is not the same game - and completely ignoring the fact that many tiers of play do not even have assistant referees.

I thought to myself that it could be interesting to make a new thread next August, which lists all obvious ref errors during the season. It could make for an interesting read. But maybe there are some specialised sites for this already?

Otherwise, I agree that video implementation for key decisions is a quite straightforward thing to do now. It worked brilliantly during test matches at high level (ie. a recent France-Spain friendly), and there is really no excuse at all anymore not to implement it quickly.

If we had video reply this season, Arsenal and Manure would be currently trying to survive relegation battle and the referees will go bankrupt without the pay from these clubs. So I don't see this happening for quite some time.

That was another poor performance from Pawson in my opinion. Linos failed to spot the ball coming out of play in Watford's favour two times, I think, but Pawson's ineptitude almost cost us in the added time. How that wasn't a foul on Firmino when he was shielding the ball at corner flag and how come there were four minutes of added time? Did I miss something?

You didn't miss anything. The referees know that they won't be suspended and will get away with it so they don't give a shit about the rules. We have seen clear cut evidence of that this season. Riley must be sacked and replaced by a foreigner. Someone that isn't a personal friend with the referees. Someone that care more about the sport than protecting a friend.

To be honest the only thing Pawson got right yesterday was the Lucas yellow.

Jon Moss was good against WBA, a ref who protected the players for once. (No fan usually of his but that was a good performance).

Pawson was led by the crowd so badly, he even overruled his linesman on two occasions.
