Man City avoid all of this by paying for all of their academy players to be privately schooled. That way you're not giving preferential treatment, see? Absurd really. The irony is that we had asked the PL to look at a transfer of one of our players to City and I think it was through that investigation that they thought they would have a look at what went on with the Stoke player.

The possible transfer ban that we are facing doesn't seem to have been discussed much yet. Maybe this is the best place to put this Guardian article on it, which doesn't put us in a good light. Thankfully, the threatened ban is limited to signing academy players. Even so it would seriously mess up our development plans.

    https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/mar/30/liverpool-transfer-ban-academy-players
Liverpool could be banned from signing academy players over allegations they breached Premier League rules when tapping up a schoolboy from Stoke City.

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs being investigated for poaching young talent as the Premier League seeks to enforce new rules on academy transfers. The Anfield club, who have been in negotiations with the League over a potential sanction, could be fined or hit with a transfer embargo if found guilty of offering a banned inducement to the former Stoke player. Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid have faced similar embargoes in recent seasons.

The ongoing investigation centres on a complaint that Liverpool reneged on a deal to pay the 12-year-old’s private school fees, leaving his parents in thousands of pounds of debt. Stoke had been paying the fees until the player, regarded as one of their brightest talents, accepted an offer to join Liverpool with an inducement that the Anfield club would pay for his education until the age of 16.

When discovering that new rules introduced last summer meant the club would have to pay for all of their schoolchildren to be privately educated, it is alleged, Liverpool withdrew the offer, prompting the boy’s parents to pull out of the deal. However, the boy cannot sign for another club until Stoke have received a compensation fee of £49,000 from Liverpool and, in the meantime, the parents have been left liable for school fees that are believed to run into thousands.

The Premier League, ironically, is also investigating a complaint from Liverpool over the departure of one of their academy players to Manchester City.

Rules were introduced last summer in an attempt by the Premier League to address growing concerns over poaching and the number of children unable to join academies because of compensation demands. Parents and clubs must now sign a declaration that no inducements have been offered as part of a transfer. Liverpool are expected to be fined by the Premier League and could also be placed under a transfer embargo.

I don't really get this. As explained earlier by Kopstar and others, it seems that we started speaking to a kid under old regulations, they abruptly changed, we dropped out interest as we realised we were now in breach of the new regulations and reported ourselves to the FA... and they seem to want to throw the book at us. I'm really not seeing what we did wrong... can anyone enlighten me?

Did not M City poach a young keeper from us a few months ago?
This new situation is crazy. Personally I think it is being hyped up by the press and will go away soon.

Our club ranks need to wise up, they are pretty bad at handling these sort of matters. Started off with Suarez and Evra saga, to Sakho and now this?

Those that were responsible for the Suarez/Evra fuck up are now all gone. Principally to blame were Comolli, Wignall and Ward and none of them remain at the club. One of the individuals principally responsible for the Sakho debacle is also no longer at the club.

In this instance I'm really struggling to fault what the club have done; they were absolutely right to check with the PL. The only question really is whether they entered into the arrangement with the player/player's parents regarding schooling at a time when they ought to have known that the PL was introducing rules that would prohibit that sort of preference. Normally those sorts of changes would go through a collective consultation and would be advised to the clubs well in advance so if someone made a commitment that they knew or ought to have known would be prohibited by the time the player joined the club then yeah, that's not great.

Incidentally, it would also not be that surprising either. Our in-house legal team are, imo, not the best. The external lawyers they use however...they're generally very good.

They use centrefield and two or three different sets of barristers for most football related matters.

The last paragraph from the Guardian piece is worth highlighting:
Liverpool’s ban – similar to punishments handed out to Barcelona, Real Madridand Atlético Madrid in recent years – will not affect their attempts to sign Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham this summer. The coveted left-back, who has risen to prominence at Craven Cottage, turns 17 before the next transfer window and is therefore eligible to sign a professional rather than an academy contract.

Watched the CONCACAF CL semifinal between Tigres and Whitecaps.

Gignac still has the touch he had at Marseille. Beauty of a strike.

Notable was a kid that got subbed on by Whitecaps early into match due to injury. Just turned 16. Already playing pro, first player born in this millennia to play an MLS match. Alphonse Davies. Of course, ScoutNation already has clips of him posted.

Kid has an amazing turn of pace and good footwork. In the last 5 mins I watched him skin a number of Tigres players in 1v1 and even 1v2. Still has the maturing part to come but I definitely haven't seen the last of him. He will be in Europe in next 2 years

I think it's part of our strategy to gain an advantage by baffling opponents. When they see the team-sheet before the game, they'll think 'fuck, we know they're playing a couple of Dembeles, we just don't know which ones...'

Could also be very handy in avoiding having players sent off for two yellow cards.
