This is going to be a tough tie. AM are just the type of team that could cause us problems. We can beat anyone in the world at the moment, but this will be a test. A score draw in Madrid would be good, anything more a bonus.

Normally I would agree but their recent form has been really poor.

This is their form for last 7 games:

2:2 Valencia (D)
1:0 Granada (W)
0:1 Real Madrid (L)
0:0 Leganes (D)
1:2 C. Leonesa (L)
1:2 Eibar (L)
0:0 Real Madrid (L on penalties)

Expect Diego Costa to be a snide fuck for this one. Kicks and elbows everywhere while being a fragile bird when he's challenged. Actually, we can expect that from all of them I suppose. From a footballing side we have the edge so they are going to try all the ricks they can to level it out. Really going to need to keep our wits about us.

wouldn't suprise me if hendo started the 6 this one, with fabinho coming on later to push him forward. if fab had had just a little more time then i'd be sure he starts, but this allows us to get ox or keita in the middle.

it's been so long, with a bit of a procession towards the league, thats its nice to return to some proper european knockout football. really getting excited now!

Atletico are caught in no man’s land at the moment. They’re trying to shake off the clogger image by being more adventurous in attack but they simply aren’t very good at it. I keep reading people worrying about how tough this game will be; apart from fouling incessantly, this Atletico team has precious little in common with the side that reached two CL finals.

If we are anywhere near our best, we’ll wrap this up in the away leg with a 3-0 success.

I expect a horrible match, against a typical anti-football team. Not sure how that will pan out to be fair. Hopefully there will be a strong ref who won't fall in for all the shenanigans and foul-play. And we need all our toughest guys on the pitch for that one, as it will be a physical and mental battle, and most probably an almighty scrap.

Hopefully our lads will be able to get away with something, and set up the return game in a favourable way for us. Fingers crossed!

These two matches are going to be our toughest ones so far this season, did not like the draw at all. They defend with 11 men extremely organised great goalkeeper.

Not optimistic about going true to the next round, to be honest.

Can't understand this point of view personally and I see it a bit at the moment. This is the worst Athletico team there's been under Simeone. They're still good defensively even though Godin is gone and of course Oblak is exceptional but they can't score to save their lives. Moratta and Costa are nowhere near their peaks, Felix has underwhelmed to put it lightly. So that attack is coming up against the best defence in the world.
It'll be low scoring over there and a handy win at home imo.

Should we bring Divock out for this one?

We got our post break warm up game against Norwich out of the way - so will be good if we can demolish them. But I think it could be a close affair - and the return leg will be the difference.

Either way, its all amazing. All of it. And its HAPPENING. It really is.

I'm expecting a turgid game for this one. Atletico will throw 11 men behind the ball and try to catch us on the break. They will also deploy the usual dark arts of diving all over the place whilst trying to cripple our players when the ref isn't looking.

Our away form in Europe isn't that brilliant. Our last away game in a knockout tie was woeful.

I'm sort of expecting a 0:0 here but an away goal and a victory would be most welcome.

Tough game this. They don't concede many but don't score many either. The draw specialists and it is possible to get through a round of the CL without actually winning either game. We will need to be more clinical in front of goal than we have been for a few weeks here because there won't be many chances. An away goal is critical. If they have anything to hang on to at Anfield then they'll hang on for dear life and be using every trick in the book.

I'm assuming that Fabinho and Mane will be in from the start here. This is likely to be a throwback game. The sort you used to see a lot of in the old European Cup. These days we seem to have a game plan for every team and occasion so if we need to mix it a bit I am not too worried. We're not so easily intimidated any more. Just need to be sure that when the chances come we put them away.

He is statistically on a whole different level for evening games, if I recall correctly...

We probably won't destroy them but I do think we will win over two legs.

We should be far too good defensively to be overly troubled by this lot and we are far better offensively than anything they face on a weekly basis.

They'll undoubtedly spend most of the game diving, hacking our lads and surrounding the referee though - which level's the playing field slightly.

They are a team who simply don't know how to score, while we don't know how to concede. So I fully expect them to score one freak goal. :cautious:
But then, we know what we do best when we concede. Of course, score!
3-1 to the Redmen, with the first 60 being the most dull minutes of football we have seen this season.... followed by a Red blitz :)

I always feel that meeting a team in CL who are 'not performing in their domestic league' is a dangerous sign. It often indicates they are concentrating (in training and what have you) on their next CL opponent. We need to be up for this one, just can not allow ourselves to take anything for grnted.
0-5 to us Mane 2 Salah 2 Firmino 1 assits from Firmino, Hendo, TAA and Robbo. :)

Apart from being a better team, we have the advantage of having all but wrapped up the league. We can focus fully on defending the European crown and that means bringing our best against a tough team that won't let up for a second. We'll never have a better chance of winning another treble.

Let's bring it on.
