And so the rumours go on, and on and on. Trouble is it's the same every season, only the names change.
Best not to believe anything until we see the Melwood lean.

This deal is very decent because whilst you're right regarding players coming from Serie A, this would only be a big issue if we were paying top money for him.

When you look at the positives of paying low-mid range money (in todays money), excellent stats and importantly doing it consistently for 2 years, good age, good attributes, pace, dribbling which is what we need.

Balance this vs the fact that coming from Serie A we may see a step down from what he achieved there in terms of goals and assists, it still comes out as a positive.

Bear in mind hes likely going to backup to Mane and a guy we can rotate in when the going gets tough. So were not relying on him as a big money deal, he'll just further the options in this team.

The expectation that we wont be getting the same stats as he is getting at Roma, is reflected in the price.

many appear to be expecting him to be our left winger next season.. i haven't seen many if any posts about him being a squad player but on the basis of him being a squad player then i'd have to agree with you :-)

So we're breaking our transfer record on a squad filler?

He will be a serious and definite challenger for first 11 and not an inferior option at that.

Not so much squad filler like say Lucas, but certainly not a guaranteed spot. His place will be as secure as say Firmino's who also cost about the same.

4-3-3 worked well against the big teams with Coutinho on the left. but perhaps vs the park the bus teams, Salah comes in to add another runner to be more expansive and break them down, Coutinho drops back.

He'll be an extra tool in the locker.

Realistically the other option was Oxlade Chamberlain who would definitely not be a guaranteed starter.

It's likely that if it is our transfer record, then it will get broken at least once during the rest of this window and possibly twice.

Basically, with the recent inflation we've seen for PL transfers, two years or even just a year ago this would have probably been in the £18-20m bracket and no-one would have batted an eye.

That said, though, I would still expect him to be starting the majority of games. But it does mean that if Mane is unavailable for any reason we don't suddenly fall apart due to lack of pace in attack.

I get your point but I think it applies far more to a certain type of player coming from Italy than others. Pacy wide players are far more likely, in my opinion, to adapt than say a ball playing centre midfielder or a centre forward. The Italian league isn't the catenaccio defence feast it once was. Last year there were a total of 1,123 goals in the league season compared to 1,064 in the Premier League or 1,118 in La Liga. The Bundesliga with two less sides saw 877 goals so whilst there are different styles of play in the different leagues, painting Serie A as a slow paced, defensive orientated league is, in my opinion a little bit dated.

As you say though, it's a matter of opinion and we'll just have to see how he does if/when he arrives.

Perhaps it's just a coincidence but it's actually Napoli and Roma that were the two top scoring clubs.

Roma scored 13 more than Juve, in no small part down to some Egyptian winger...

The reports from Egypt a couple of days ago saying he'd have his medical today looking accurate from that tweet. Here's hoping it all goes well. A very good player who I think will reach another level playing for us. Beginning to look forward to the Melwood lean.

He scored a lot of goals against the weaker teams in Seria .that's everyone bar Napoli, Juve and..oh that's It nowadays.. Like to see his assists. How are his crosses, through balls and cut backs into the box?
Haven't got Seria A on satellite..gone are the (goal Lazzo!!!!)Saturday mornings with baldy James Richardson and an Cappuccino outside a fountain reading pink newspapers..nostalgia. Then footy focus and Des. Before SKY insulted the beautiful game with soccer a.m.
Anyone got got them clips? Assists?

I've reached the stage of cautious optimism. I would be fully optimistic but given that Loic Remy remains the only player I'm aware of who's failed a medical (hell, Arsenal even signed a guy with a broken back once) I'm limiting myself to cautious optimism. Nothing set until I see the lean, but I'm starting to feel good about this one.

There is an interesting point to discuss there. To compete at multiple fronts including PL and CL, how many first choice players do we need.
If we consider 433 as our basic formation, we need 5 attackers(strikers+wingers), 5 midfielders, 3 center backs, 3 full backs and 2 goalies. We currently have :
Attackers - Firmino, Coutinho, Mane, Origi.
Midfielders - Hendo, Can, Wij, Lallana.
    CB - Matip, Lovren.
    FB - Milner, Clyne.
    GK - Mignolet, Karius
So we can accommodate 1 attacker, 1 midfielder (0 in case we move Cou to midfield - then 2 attackers), 1 cb and 1 fb. We can use kids and sell all others(lack of quality or injury prone). But its mist to have atleast these 18 first choice players if we want to compete on 4 fronts. And Salah signing is inline with this. Thought process in terms of only first 11 are outdated now.
