Wouldn't surprise me if they had been in negotiations all summer and got Lille to say it was with us for 'Bantz '

French and Portuguese speakers amoung us! Is the French Pépé pronounced the same as Pepé in Portuguese? Because to me 'pay-pay' sounds like we spend twice as much as 'pe-pay'

Bayern's backup plan for Sane? I don't know where else he could go. Inter? Atletico? PSG?

I wouldn't be surprised if it were Bayern. Nikola and I talked about Pepe months ago in the Bundesliga thread and at that time it was believed/reported that Bayern had already locked him up, legally, without actually tapping up.

EDIT: And I will reiterate my own stance, I have posted that I am a fan of his potential and play but not for 70M. I understand the market is askew and there is no rhyme or reason for these valuations, but I would rather FSG "keep their powder dry" as the saying goes for something bigger and better. 70M for me, represents a game changing player. Pepe is class, but he isn't 70M IMO. And I have watched him play plenty, not YouTube scouting.

Ancelotti: 'Pepe and James talks ongoing'

"They were in our hotel. I said hello, as I did with all the agents who came here. Obviously, we are interested in Pepe, his agents are here and there’s no point hiding that. Negotiations are in progress and we’ll see what happens."

Oh well, seems like Napoli have made the first move. I honestly dont see Klopp entering this bidding war, are we part of the four clubs tho?....

Nicolas Pepe: Napoli agree deal with Lille to sign Ivory Coast winger (Sky Sports)

"Napoli have satisfied our request of 80m euros. Now it will be up to the player to decide where to go, also on the basis of other proposals that his agents received from four clubs" Lopez told Tuttosport.

L’Equipe seems to think we are. My guess is we at one time held an interest at a certain price but Lille have been determined to instigate a bidding war which clubs like us, Bayern, Arsenal etc haven’t been willing to get into. Those interested clubs have either stood firm on their valuation or moved on to other targets. Napoli’s reported interest has only come about since James has seemingly chosen to move to Atleti instead.

So Italian media reporting he couldn't agree wages with Napoli. It sounds like the money is just too high for us to have been in the running for this one, both fee and salary.

I don’t think we were ever in for him.
We may have scouted him but if Lille can accept Arsenal’s awful instalment offer (they can’t afford Teirny or zaha so this deal must be really broken down). Then they would’ve accepted whatever we offered.
Wow! Great to see Arsenal sorting out their defence this summer, no wonder Koscielny was so upset.

Arsenal couldnt afford Zaha but can afford to pay virtually the same amount for Pepe unless the payment structure was the issue...Palace must be fuming (although happy they still get to keep their star player).

The majority of transfer fees are paid in instalments (that's the norm). Bizarre that they'd pay that for Pepe but not for Zaha who's the better player imo, but perhaps they preferred the left-footed option. Particularly with Ozil on the wane.

Hate the fact that yet again this transfer seems dependent upon satisfying an agent.

Palace never wanted to sell Zaha so probably wanted a significant chunk of the fee up front that Arsenal couldn’t afford whilst Lille are probably just happy getting the fee they wanted even if spread over a longer length term.

Yep, that's a fair observation. Arsenal strengthening their strongest area whilst leaving their shit midfield and defence unchanged. New Arsenal same as the old Arsenal.

My immediate thought was that Lyon may have agreed to recieve the payments evenly over the whole of the five year deal (instead of the more common 3 years?).

Alternatively, with the Zaha deal, i wonder if the sticking point was with Utd - and whether they could demand their % of the deal paid in one go, rather than as a share of each instalment as and when paid.

Not overly fussed we're not signing Pepe, would have been nice but not sure he's worth that kind of money. Odd to see a player publicly available but none of the really top clubs interested. Reminds me a bit of the Tomas Lemar situation a year or two ago.

But, I do still think we need a forward player and time is quickly running out. Also, anyone coming in now is going to need time to get up to speed so can only assume we're happy to start the season without Mane and drop him, Firmino, and Salah straight back in as and when they're back from their holidays.

I also really miss that excitement of signing someone new. Actually a bit jealous of all the Arsenal fans buzzing off the recent signings they've made.

Arsenal boardroom. We really need a new defence.
Someone pipes up. Ignore that, this winger Pepe is available and everyone wants him lets see if we can get him.

Could well be right I’ve heard rumours of the % being between 20-25 and if Big Ed wants that in one go chances are Palace would have no Zaha and slim to no money in the bank to replace him. Add that everybody would then know Palace were desperate the fees they’d pay would go up.

I was a bit worried about these links because I couldn't see us signing another speedy, left footed, goal scoring, right winger without us selling the one we've got. Looks like he plays in exactly the same space as Salah
