Yeah in the summer I can see it as well. The discussion started with someone made a statement that it was a lack of foresight that is resulting in us not going after a CB/LB and DM during this window. The reality is it was the use of common sense, not a lack of foresight, that has us buying Sturridge + Coutinho instead of a LB/CB and DM during this window.

Consensus here was that the defence was sorted and we needed attackers.

Ridiculous.
I don't know how many times I've pointed this out but we haven't had any cover for Lucas since Poulsen was jettisoned for being pants; how many more transfer windows should pass by before it qualifies as a lack of foresight by the club for you my friend? We have nobody else who can do what Lucas does. DM is a SPECIALIST position, which has to be learnt through many months of hard work - not just in time for the next game. When Lucas is out we just get ripped in midfield because our CMs haven't got the physical atributes or training to play the holding role. Sigh....

There is still time to bring in a DM though in Diame. At £3.5m it's a no-brainer. No doubt he'll join the Gooners though.Feel he would be a useful stop-gap until we can find someone of better quality. Has this Coutinho fella got round to having his medical yet? Or is that a silly question?

Everyone knows we need a backup DM, and no one is saying we don't. Its just silly to think that when entering the window we should have prioritized a backup DM higher than starting forwards.

We don't need starting defenders or a starting DM, but we needed attackers who could start, and the team did the right thing by prioritizing that ahead of squad players.

Coutinho's work permit approved.

ESPN reports Philippe Coutnho's work permit has been approved by the Home Office therefore he the club can officially confirm Coutinhos as Liverpool's new player.

seems like it's taking ages to publish a little headline on LFCTV...

I'm glad he's taking number 20, someone said 9 & 10 were available - pressure with being given those numbers.

I'm half wondering whether BR is using those shirt numbers as an incentive. "You want the famous number 10 shirt with legends like Barnes & Molby - you play well and earn it"

If so, shrewd move imo

I was hoping we would strengthen our attacking options (like everyone else).

I thought the other areas we would need to strengthen would be looked at in the summer. However i will make no apologies for being annoyed that we didn't go for Moussa Sissoko.

I've been going on about wanting to sign him for a couple of years now and at such a cheap price (or free if we wanted to wait and get him in the summer) he could have been a great signing for us.

My understanding is that #9 and #10 have already been registered with the league this year. Players have the option in the summer to choose new numbers if they feel so. (Just like when Lucas was debating changing his #21)

And there was me over-thinking it lol

Would be a good incentive though

It's never official until someone photoshops a photo of him holding his new shirt, posting it before the offal does.

There should be a thread for these things. Best transfer photoshops.

Yeah huge pressure with #9 and #10. No way Coutinho live up to Carroll or Cole's legacy here.

20 odd million quid for paulinho? Pfffttt...
Crazy prices at the moment for the Brazilian talents. €4m for Paulinho in the summer, now approx €20m+ being quoted to Inter.

OK, Paulinho won the Copa Libertadores and the World Club Trophy with Corinthians, plus has now represented Brazil 8 times (under Mano Menezes, when paired with variously Romulo, Arouca, Ralf and Ramires) in rapid succession and has even been called up by the new Brazilian coach Scolari. I just don't rate Paulinho all that highly though. A very decent box-to-box player, but hardly a world-beater.

Scolari will experiment with D. Luiz at DM against England on Feb. 6 (second-half only). Scolari has also named his first 20-man Brazil squad ...by including not even one recognized DM/Volante-type player. No Sandro (injured), no Lucas (hopefully just fitness?), no Ralf, no Jean etc. Just Arouca, Paulinho and Ramires (Chelsea) and all of these are box-to-box runners. Scolari did win a World Cup in 2002 using 3 CB's (3-5-2 with no DM's), 2 side-backs and 4 top-attackers (Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and Ronaldo etc)

Hernanes included too, which I welcome, as well as Bayern's sensation at CB (Dante). But then again veteran Julio Cesar gets the nod ahead of our former goalie Diego Cavalieri, who was brilliant aka player-of-the-year material in the Brasileiro last term. He's also recalled Luis Fabiano in attack.

Brazil has 50+ talents to choose from though and Coutinho was very briefly in-the-picture post 2010 World Cup. If Coutinho can perform for us, he has a semi-decent chance of being involved again, as has Lucas ...although Scolari is generally very defensive oriented with aggressive side-backs and preffering experience in attack

Luis Fabiano is back with the Selecão? That's surprising. I really, really hope Lucas gets involved for the World Cup.

Don't mind us taking the chance on a player like this, big club experience and all

But this should be the last of the young skinny players who can be blown over by a fart from Matt Smith that we recruit. After this we need to start living in the present and recruiting players who can physically compete to balance it out. Is not what we are doing and we will pay dearly for it if we don't wake up

In isolation, this move has some innovation about it and its worth exploring however and be interested to see how he gets on, though expect him to take the rest of this season to settle. But hopefully in the end it will be more worth it than some of the others

I remember several 'player' signs threads from back in the day that would always send the board into meltdown. Best ones from memory were the 'Villa' Signs and 'Bent' Signs threads lol

It seems Paulinho has said he doesn't want to sign for Inter as he gets paid more at Corinthians.
Lets hope this doesn't change Inter's plans, although hopefully Coutinho is a done deal.

Apparently, Inter are waiting to announce Coutinho's departure alongside arrivals of Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Ezequiel Schelotto to appease the fans, hence the wait.
