Was talking in the EPL thread about how it was a real pity that we couldn't score 1 more goal (or keep clean sheet) and have ourselves top of the league for the 2nd international break in a row.

But then honestly, i think that would bring us unnecessary pressure, and surely it didn't do us any favor last time. So could be blessing in disguise

"Playing a 18 year old wide forward at wing back is though not going to show him at his best."

Sterling recently had to play that role in an U21 game when we were down to 10 men ( lloyd Jones sent off) Rogers was at that game and Sterling played the role extremely well. I suspect that performance infuenced Rogers decision to play him there on Saturday.

Gerrard as also played in that postion and done a good job. But let's face it we should not really playing a player out of postion. If this was against a team from the top half he would have not played him there, too much of a gamble. It paid off against Palace but it would not work every time.

Overall I'm happy - and it's been helped by BR's comments after the game where he's stated we didn't play well at all. He knows, so the players know, and that can only be a good thing.
Think that's the salient point. I'd be worried if BR was bigging us up right now, he's being very critical of the teams play and rightly so. He's throwing down the gauntlet to the players to continue to improve. As I said before, we'll be lethal if we can manage to play for a full 90 minutes rather than in dribs and drabs as we have done so far.

Lucas should be saved for the second half replacing Gerrard...not sure whether BR will do this though. Think that would give us some additional solidity in the second half of games and keep the energy levels up.

Was at the game and the 2nd half was so frustrating to watch. We should be sat at the top of the table by going out and punishing a woeful Crystal Palace side in the 2nd half and putting another 2 or 3 past them. Instead I was sat in my seat getting wound up at team's negativity and needless giving away of the ball in attempt to close the game out (Enrique and Sterling especially). All season long we have been brilliant first half and struggled in the second half, and I understand that we had slim leads to protect for the points, but the game was over on Saturday and it was really irritating to watch us not put Palace to the sword for the full 90 minutes.

Having said that, we were terrific first half and the new SAS look capable of scoring with every attack we create. Moses linked up well in the hole and Henderson was absolutely outstanding for the whole game and was my MOTM for sure.

This will hopefully no longer be a problem when we next play against the Toon in just under two weeks time. Johnson and Cissokho hopefully available!

I'd like to think so... Its no secret that playing as a wingback would suit Johnson down to a tee, and the formation allows SAS to play up top together (which could be the key to winning several matches this season). Just a bit skeptical about Cissokho as not seen much of him.

Really happy with the 1st half. 2nd half, we didnt turn up. Soft goal to concede. Sterling was below par. So was moses. With every game passing, mignolet proves how good he is. I was one of those skeptics, never felt he could replace reina, but he has disproved every one. He will be twice the keeper reina was if he keeps going like this.

Sterling has hardly kicked a ball for us this season though so I for one am giving him the benefit of the doubt on that performance. He was put in in a position which was new to him too so again maybe the criticism he is getting is a bit harsh. He is only a kid too at the end of the day and has time on his side to develop. We haven't had a decent winger in years and suddenly we get him and Ibe coming through at the same time which is fantastic for the long term future of the side. I think Raheem will mature into a striker playing off the shoulder of the last defender. He would be fantastic on the counter when we are under the cosh or holding out for 3 points in the last 20mins of a game.
If anything I would be more critical of Enrique whose performance was again under par. He is in serious threat of some bench time when Cissokko is fit I believe.
Watched the goal we conceded again.....................schoolboy stuff. Brendan needs to get the set up at corners and free kicks sorted because that was a soft soft goal to concede.

Henderson MOM for me simply for his industry and energy in the middle of the park. He is slowly maturing into a fixture in the side and for me that would be in central midfield when his best attributes would be maximised.

I thought Enrique did well on Saturday.

We all seem to under-estimate the physical hard work and fitness that it takes to play as a wing back.
If the wing back gets forward too much he wont be able to defend (cos you can't be in 2 places at the same time), and if he's too defensive then he won't be able to support the attack.

I think Enrique worked hard, got the balance between attack and defence about right, put a number of very good balls into the box, one of which was a very good assist for the 1st goal.
If Cissoko is better than Enrique, and able to do better then him in the Premiere League than I will be very happy, though none of us on this site can say that for sure cos Cissoko's not yet really played in the premiere league with it's unique challenges.

I can not get my head round the difference between first half and second half of every match this season.

It really looked as though Brendan had given the team Pie, mash & lashings of gravy at half tiime. Maybe followed by Sticky pudding and custard.

first do no harm. Primary role of a back is to defend and to support the attack. Dont lose your mark in your own half and for the love of Pete not in your own 6 yard box on a set piece. That us what jersey pulling is for. ;)

It will be interesting when Cissoko is fit. He is primarily a winger first then a LB. I think he will give Enrique a run for his money.

Though it was gd, I think BR got to sort out the defence in setpieces. This is the 3rd goal we conceded from set pieces since the League Cup match against scums. Two of the goals cost us two matches, which is terrible. We shld go look for a coach who specialises in set pieces quickly, the current ones aint gd enuff.

I'm pretty sure it's the other way around.

I think so as well. Played LB for the U21's Monday and looked close to match fit.Another 10 days to go so should be available.
