Tail end of the season, the result is what matters.

A goal down after what's perceived to be injustice, but then come back with two goals. That bodes well.

Milner with a majestic clearance off the line, as had to get power on it as well. MOTM for me. Probably his last season as left back cover, but his value on and off the pitch is immense.

Has Fabinho got to 5/10 at any instance since he came back in?
Some really poor play from him creating unforced pressure.
He had one decent game off the bench, forget who it was against.

Pretty awful the rest of the time though, a real liability at the moment.

Well I entered this game thinking I'd take any win. ANY WIN, literally.

Our guys literally delivered exactly enough to get the 3 points, which is all that matters, so I'm not complaining. I have to say our guys are looking a bit flat and in need of inspiration. Hopefully the high stakes will shake this lethargy from them on Tuesday. I freely admit I was fearing the worst when we got shafted by the VAR for the early goal.

As for the MOTM - only 3 words - JAMES FUCKING MILNER.

Only 9 heart-stopping finals to go, YNWA!

Does anyone know why we now appear to be a long ball team? 5th highest long ball % in the league apparently.

Just seems weird since we’ve gone “route one” Bobby seems completely off his game, like his build up ability has gone.

We lose the ball so much with aimless punts into space behind.

3 ugly points but I just dont care, 3 more wins and its ours.

Milner MOTM I thought

Will need a better performance v Athletico. Big European night ahead. Anfield will need to lift us. Crowd was good tonight.

Looked like he swap places with VVD late on in the match. o_O

Milner MOTM. Pretty unconvincing again, Fabinho and Firmino are both performing way below their actual levels of late and it’s harming us at both ends of the pitch. Did well to come back from behind in the first half faced with some abysmal officiating. In the second half we allowed the game to drift again and created very little. Relieved to get over the line, only three more wins to go now.

However, not convinced we are going to get past Atletico playing like this. We look suspect at the back and lacking a spark going forward. Can’t think of anybody in the side who’s really in any kind of form right now.
Fab was allowed to look better by their poor play in the second half. He can build on that half though. Bobby had an off-day. Still a really dangerous player.

Gee I'm a bit worried about Atletico after that..
Bobby needs to start scoring ASAP, can't believe he has zero this season at Anfield. Think he needs some competition (will Minamino be ready soon?) or we need someone more clinical through the middle. Not a fan of him coming so deep as neither Gini nor ox really score enough to take his space.

Milner was solid at LB and virg recovered from his poorer Watford performance but defensively we still look shakey especially as Adrian doesn't look in form. We might be okay on Wed if we are super clinical up front but will need to put in a much improved performance

Well Van Dijk and Gomez were the only ones trying to play as a no.10.. I’d push Virgil forward, his ball for Mane.. Woosh beauty.. Pitty our midfield pass it backwards.

We've had some real success with it this season, so it's not a problem in itself.

The issues arise when teams sit really deep and we still try it or run out of ideas otherwise. Something we need to adapt to and improve on.

You don't think it is a mental block is it?
Hi Maria, sorry for not answering in the pre-match thread, I didn't get in there anymore.

Yes, of course it is. The less games are required to close on the title, the more pressure. And especially this kind of must-win games heaps a lot of pressure on the players. You could see how their whole confidence was knocked out of them after the first goal. The amount of mistakes they committed after that was staggering.

But credit to them. They got back in (thanks Mo for that great first goal, and thanks Sadio for keeping your cool on the second), and won the game by holding out while fighting against their nerves. That's all which was needed, well done lads!

Also, the Anfield crowd has a mental block as well apparently. The atmosphere at times was terrible, I felt for the players!

I get that, its a great tool and as you say we’ve had some success but I dont get why it seems all we do.. Just seems our front 3 are a bit starved of being part of the build up, and a lot of that is having them chase down a lot of aimless punts.

We opened them up easier when Gomez/Virgil drilled it into our front men and broke the lines.
