Well, I can complain about VAR. Personally confused about how that goal stood today, given the clear foul by Mertens on Van Dijk, given that VAR ruled out a clear foul/red card/penalty against Real yesterday in basically the exact same situation. But then I remember that United game a few weeks back when Origi was booted off the ball and United went up the other end to score, and it stood.

But that's all okay, because we're apparently LiVARpool, and the FA, media, UEFA, FIFA, and the Illuminati are all involved in a mass conspiracy to ensure we win the league, Champions League, FA Cup, Twenty-20, the general election, and the Tour De France.

Lovren MOTM even without the goal, Hendo close second.
Much better second half. For some reason we struggle against 10 defenders....Salah being wrestled in the box was bollocks, ref was terrible he lost control early and never got the game back. Fab loss would be worst case scenario at this juncture.
At Salzburg we are going to have to play like we are 3 nil down against Barca, it's fucking doable!

It was a foul. Mertens(?) made no attempt to play the ball, and therefore it was a foul. Otherwise, I don't think you are wrong. In the match thread at the time, I noted that no one covered for VVD.
I thought VVD was fouled, but didn’t think it was obvious enough to be reversed. I was more upset about Koulibaly’s python like stranglehold on Mo. Overall, I wasn’t too bothered by the officiating. They had their snide moments and we did too. They were falling easily, but I felt we were playing the man instead of the ball at times too. Maybe I need to watch again, but I can’t.

I’m more concerned about fatigue. Rest, rest, rest. Then let’s go get the three points any which way against Brighton.

Just to add to my earlier post.

I'm getting fecking sick of Italian fans coming here and causing agro. FFS when are UEFA going to do something about these lot? We(my nephews and me) have a pre match ritual. Park up, go to get our match day badges from Paul the badge fella. Walk along Annie Road to my Brother's stone in 96 Avenue then down to behind the Kop for our hot chocolate.

Tonight as I was getting my disabled Nephew out of the car behind the ARE it kicked off with the Napoli fans. I got my Nephew and Niece back into the car and I ran and got our badges. We skidaddled along the Annie Road stopped quickly at my Brother's stone and went straight in. We were going to get our usual hot chocolate but a lady who looks after our disabled supporters told my nephew to get inside as they were expecting trouble.
I saw my Nephew and Niece in and then went to my seat.

It's the twenty first century. With the technology we have we can do all sorts. A feckin cavemen are roaming around looking for a fight.

I feckin despair.
Glad you’re safe, my friend. No one deserves that.

Just quietly, I can actually picture both us and Napoli losing the final game. It would be just like Napoli to make us look second rate then lose against a team with only a single point in the group stages. And it would also be just like us to ride or luck with other teams giving us a lifeline.

Napoli came to park the bus, and after they scored even more so. It was expected and logical they would play that way.

I don't think there was lack of effort, or even particularly bad as some have commented. The concern was lack of ideas and creativity. We could have continued lobbing crosses until Sunday, Firmino alone against 3 CB ( and hood ones )would never be a able to do something.
Lack of threat or penetration with the ball through the middle is a known problem.

I'm singling out Klopp for continually playing Gomez in a position he's terrible in.
Actually it's a combination of Gomez playing there with three mids who are defensive minded. The attacking intent Trent brings allows the lack of creativity from our mids, and expecting Gomez to be the creative outlet like Trent is harsh on him. He can do the job that a typical RB is expected to do, but not what our current two FBs are doing. Hence, the Ox change brought some creativity back to our side. Might have been the case of giving too much respect to Napoli, which also is a case against Utd.

I am not a fan of our current midfield because to play Henderson and Wijnaldum together in the midfield meant we will be relying heavily on fullbacks and Firmino to create goals. If Firmino is off on the day, we then tend to cross the ball into the box aimlessly like we are these days. We don't have a towering striker that could match any centrehalves in aerial duel, and to keep hitting the ball high into the box won't solve our lack of goal problems.

We're also lacking on the long shot department, purely because most of our midfielders are not shot takers. Have a look at them whenever they got to the edge of the box, Henderson received a few last night, and turned the ball to fullbacks to lob it in. Same for Wijnaldum so far. None of them would take a punt and hit shot from distance.

We are also lacking in the dribbling department. We relied on Mane, Salah and Firmino to dribble the ball against the defence, but if our midfield has someone who could do that effectively, it would draw their defence out. We don't. Last night we saw a few openings carved out by Milner when he dribbled into the box or play one-two with Mane or Firmino, He had a few good moves behind the defence. Wijnaldum and Henderson don't do that at all.

We relied heavily on fullbacks sending a searching ball diagonally from deep or at the final 3rd. We relied a lot on our centre halves or Fabinho to send the ball for our fullbacks to chase behind the defence. The two midfielders we have is to make sure we have bodies to win the ball back when we lose it. That's Henderson and Wijnaldum. But if we have been securing wins with a lot of clean sheets then I am fine with their work, but we aren't. We concede more this season than we had last.

All that made us rather too predictable to play against, and that's my gripe. That's the exact problem that I highlighted a few seasons ago after the departure of Coutinho and injury to Oxlade-Chamberlain, and now it shows. Just because we won the Champs League does not mean we will automatically be untouchables to everyone. We need to be less predictable with our game plan especially when we are up against tacticians like Ancelotti, the Italian brickwall game plan.

We didn’t lose, which was the only positive for me. Napoli got the goal and defended for their lives. Didn’t really look like a team in turmoil to me.
They achieved there objective and now face a relatively easy game in Naples.
Whereas we have a high scoring game in Salzburg coming up and another fixture that means something to add to an already congestive list of games.
It’s hard to choose a MOTM, Lovren gets it because of the goal, I thought Mane again played well, Salah was nowhere to be seen. I’m going to the Brighton game, so hopefully we perform a lot better than we did last night, we were awful.
Hopefully Fabinho injury isn’t bad.

The switch in formation to 4231 worked well. Something to think about with mega defensive 442 sides.

Napoli play awful football and their fans are vile. Hopefully we don't see them again for many a season.

Last year, a group of my match going mates went to Napoli away - they were sitting outside in a bar... then came some ultras, faces covered on motorbikes - had some chains. Only 1 intention.

Mates were hurt, but luckily not anything severe.

No one went this year, which is how stupid it is.

You did the right thing to stay safe, but it’s ridiculous in the modern era.

I forgot to post last night: both tired and disappointed. I was hoping for a no-frills 3 points and ended up with an irrelevant draw and one of our best players injured.

This is a game that we could and should have won. I think that Ancelotti may have Klopp's system sussed (and fair play to him on that one) but this was clearly a poor time to drop one of our wing-backs.

I did think it was a foul on VVD leading to the Napoli goal. The German commentators regarded it as 50:50. Regardless we should play to the whistle. As it was, I thought it was very well taken.

I could see our equaliser coming and we should have scored a winner. However, we can't rely on last minute goals all the time. We need to tighten the defence.

I put Ox and Lovren as MotM but it was a poor game from us. We don't make things easy for ourselves, do we?

It’s a busy month coming up now. 6 league games, Qatar, league cup game and Salzburg.
If we can get 16 points from the 18 in the league and win in Qatar then truth be told I wouldn’t be too bothered about the Salzburg and villa games.
I want this title.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to go out of the champions league but if I was given a deal where we barely drop league points I would take that.

Problem is if we don't get through against Salzburg we are going to have a tougher time to reach our goal. We will be playing Europa League, and you know Klopp don't take European tournament lightly. Since he arrived, we've been to 3 finals in 3 appearances in the European comps. I agree that the Villa match is a waste of time right now, and I think even the Qatar game should not put too much effort or stress on our player. I'd forgo that silverware for us to be in Champs League and League title hunt.

This.
Hes struggling at CB so why play him in a position he isnt very good in during an important match? I think he needs to go out on loan but with Matip made of cheese it wont happen
Milner also was a strange one. He looked way off the pace for first hour. Had a good 20 in 2nd half then went missing again.
Gini didnt get into the game at all when he came on.
Luckily Fabinho isnt playing this weekend so has a week to recover.

"I am four years in, tell me when it was easy," Jurgen Klopp said after Wednesday's game.

"I know how human beings are, people wished we could finish the group tonight and have a holiday game against Salzburg but it never happens, it will never happen.

"That is the situation."

Thats why last night is bad result. We needed to win so that the kids and ressies could play final CL game. Now its a must win, away, and a game we didnt need to play in a busy schedule.
We could be heading to Qatar out of the cup that got us in the tournament.

I'm amazed at those who think that Mertens' elbow to Van Dijk's gut wasn't a foul and that the latter was looking for it. It's as if they've never seen Van Dijk play before and he's some softie who goes at the ground on the first opportunity. Not only it was a foul but it was a premeditated move that resulted in their goal.

That said, this doesn't excuse the way we played, which is pretty much the same slow unimaginative stuff that we've been seeing for a while now. The difference is that this time we came up against a cunning team that was good enough to prevent a winner.

The performances of late have been worrying despite the wins and last night made nothing to alleviate the concerns. Quite the contrary. If this is how we play now, how are we going to look at the end of the month?

Either we fix the defence and we start rotating more players into the first XI with good effect, or I fear that this is going to be just the beginning of a very difficult period.

No clean sheets in 11. Slightly worrying.

Also, Did you see the foul that Real got that stopped them getting a Pen awarded against them and a Red card for the Keeper? It wasn't half as bad as the foul that VVD didnt get. Reals was a slight push.

Obviously a dissapointing result and performance. Fact is we have been below par a lot in recent games but got away with it. A lot of players are below their best and we need to improve before we have a bad run and drop points. The Club World Cup is important to us as a major trophy like that might be the medicine we need .
The Napoli goal last night clearly should have ben dissallowed due to that deliberate foul on Virgil but sadly these things happen.
Hopefully no bad injuries and a return to form on Saturday.

The thudding sound of heads falling to the floor all over the world of LFC fan media is hugely disappointing. Far more disappointing than us drawing a European game at home. I was going to start a thread retrospectively celebrating our team's Anfield track record had we lost in Europe for the first time under Klopp. We're top of the group for God's sake.
This is more directed at Neil Atkinson on TAW than anyone here btw.

I really wish the authorities would start giving us as many decisions as opposition fans say they do. I can only assume that, in order to make the pro-Liverpool conspiracy less obvious, the refs keep giving things against us. Considering they've forever been supposed to ensure Liverpool win the league, they've done a piss poor job of it.

A draw is ok but not ideal unfortunately. I think my main concern is again our struggles against a deep lying defense, which is always difficult but remains a real sticking point for us I feel. Yet again we're firing crosses in from 20-30 yards out into an 18 yard box with 2-3 big central defenders sitting there waiting and ready. It feels a bit hit and hope and I'd have thought we were moving beyond that now. Our inability to keep a clean sheet at the moment is also a concern.

Still I'm glad how we reacted and got ourselves back into the game, again.

I think my largest concern is that had we won last night, we would have qualified and could have therefore looked at playing a changed side for our last game in Salzburg. Now we have to go with a strong side to ensure a result.

One thing that probably mattered for the foul leading to the goal is the size of the players. It's hard to believe someone like Mertens sending someone like VVD to the ground in pain so easily.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world. Even resting a couple of first choice players, we have enough to get a draw in Salzburg.

For me, it doesn't matter so much. Focus should be on the league. Send the U23 to Salzburg and if we go to Europa, send them again. Klopp will never do that, I reckon.

No, CL is so important now. You need to be regularly in the last 16 or better.

Just look at our recent financial accounts for reasons why

Shame, Salzburg is a nice place. Sad to see it blown to pieces by Mo.
We started the slow and the crowd fell silent.
gomez was woeful and most of the team were just about average. I honestly don’t think he has a future here. Looked poor in every game he’s played this season.
What’s Shaq done to not get on the pitch? Salah was poor and should’ve been replaced.
As usual we don’t look interested in the group games.

not kept a clean sheet for 11 games now. Worst run for over 20 years - 1998.
And we are top of the league 8 points clear!!!

I know but as a humble supporter I
would be happy to go to Europa League and get knocked out by Tel Aviv FC if that would include winning the league.

We are but the two players ive mentioned Shaq and Gomez have barely played.
I just wonder why Shaq didnt come on last night? Really odd. Gomez - his performances when he has played shows why he hasnt been picked.
We havent blown a team away this season in League so leaking goals is a slight concern.

Please clarify...after listening to last nights commentators....if we draw in Saltzburg..cause they're an iffy team...are we thru'...does it also rely on other results...cheers.
