Super Cup - Charity Shield - Club World Cup

To my mind, it's quite simple.

If we win, it is yet more trophies for the magnificent reds, and proof positive that we are brilliant.
If we lose, it's just a glorified friendly, isn't it? You know, a bit of an exercise for fitness and a chance to look at some of our fringe lads.

would be nice to win the super cup and the community shield and the world club cup as well, just so we can celebrate more before the season starts. I mean, i know we won't have our full squad but it doesn't mean we shouldn't try. Or at the very least beat City so we just nick a trophy off them right before the season starts.

I thought that the club world Cup format is changing?

I believe its now switching to a bigger tournament, every 4 years with a lot more teams...?
That’s correct. In 2021 the new format will take place instead of the Confed Cup if I’m not mistaken.

The plan was that there won’t be a Club World Cup until then.

Until Sunday or Monday nobody at LFC knew that there will be a club World Cup this year.

My theory is that had Tottenham beaten us in the final there would be no tournament this year.

But after we won the oil sheiks decided to offer FIFA some crazy money to arrange the tournament just to be able to see 'the biggest Arab attraction in world football' and one of the most influential people in the world (according to Time Magazine) Mo Salah playing in Qatar

I'm dead serious with that.

If chelski don’t replace Hazard the supercup should be doable and the WCC is in December in Qatar and it is under the old format and we play maximum 2 games including the final’ that’s the one we are missing in our portfolio again fairly doable.

Even without the CWC december and january are very difficult months. Sooner or later (with the league games in hand) we will feel the effects of it.

So 100% no full strength.

With all respect to the other continental champions - a team mix of regular starters + fringe players + 2 or 3 of the youngster should be enough to beat them.

For example

Mignolet
Hoever Lovren Gomez Lewis
Ox Wijnaldum Lallana
Shaqiri Origi Nereslol

I want the Super Cup the most. It's a proper trophy and the most prestigious of the three. I wouldn't give a fuck about the shield if it wasn't for the fact we are playing them.
Never been that interested in the WCC and imo we never took it seriously in the '80's, I think Bob and Joe saw it as an inconvenience that had to be fulfilled. But if we're going out there we might as well win the fucker.
Doubt Mo and Sadio will make the CS, Bobby might just be back on time depending how much time off he's given.

Personally this is my take on it

The community shield

Playing Man City and beating Man City will give us the upper hand going into the season. Win that, get the belief in and go from there. They won it last year, they’ll want to win it again and for us it should be no different. Just to take it off them is a good enough reason to want to win it. Plus it’s a day out at Wembley with a piece of silverware on the line.... in the past this was the norm for our club... the bread and butter so we should take this seriously. Will give us bragging rights over them as well.

Super Cup.

As winners of the Campions League (let’s talk about 6 baby) it is imperative that we win this. 1 because the champions league is superior to the Europa league and we are playing Chelsea. If we were playing a non English side I think it would make it a little more irrelevant however we have to win this game. Bragging rights up for grabs again and the chance to add more silverware to the trophy room.

Club World Cup

2 games likely against the champions of Asia / Africa / North America in the semi and almost defiantly about the South American champions in the final. Be great to win this competition for the status... be great to get that golden badge on the front of the shirt too and being able to add silverware is awesome too. The prize money etc will be handy but the status is what this one is all about.

Real Madrid and Barca have taken this competition seriously in recent years so we should too. Also I was seriously pissed off in 2005 when we lost in the final.

In summary any chance to lift a trophy should be taken.... on another note i’m hoping that we have a squad this year not to just bin the FA and League Cup off.

Would like us to win the Super Cup and Club World cup, not too arsed about the Charity Shield.

That being said, I'll be going the Charity Shield if I can. Our first competitive game since Madrid and the opportunity to taunt the Mancs all day under the London sun is too good to pass up.

If we are in it,we want to win it,ok the league and CL are the main ones we want to keep wining, but as petty as this may sound,we are 5 trophies behind United in the history of the game (66 to our 61).While we are in the position we are in,great owners, manager and team,i want us to over take United and be back on top as number 1 trophy wining team in the country and shut them fuckers up. lol

Agreed, but it's not the only one missing from our portfolio. We may have been champions 18 times but there is that one that we missed by one point.

This thread has revived some awful memories of the 2005 World Club Final so this is the trophy we now must win.

TIA would have melted if the forum was around such was the decisions and bad luck (think Sevilla). From memory, Rafa was seriously pissed, and Harry Kewell had a top game. Such a talent waste when here but I digress.

But it is exciting to have 3 trophy chances by Xmas.

Considering we'd won 1 trophy in 12 years up until Saturday (which happened to be a "minor domestic cup") I wouldn't be turning my nose up at the FA Cup or the League Cup. Winners of the FA cup since 2015 have been Arsenal, United, Arsenal, Chelsea & City. League Cup is City, City, United, City & Chelsea, so all of the other top teams in the league seem to be taking them seriously.

In my opinion there's 4 honours you can win during a season - The League, the European Cup/Uefa Cup, the FA Cup & the League Cup. Anything else is a glorified friendly
Sorry for taking so long to respond. I'm not turning my nose up at the domestic cups. If we reach the latter stages of either competition then we should go for it and try to win it, just like City did last season. But I wouldn't be bothered if we got knocked out early as we have bigger fish to fry and progressing in the FA and/or League Cup might only serve as an obstacle to winning the one that we all want.
Which is what makes winning the Super Duper Cup and the WCC (or whatever it's called) all the more attractive as it would only take three games and would hardly impact on our league season.

Really should be winning the supercup , Chelsea will have a novice in managing his first game in Europe. Don't seem to be making any new signings as they have a transfer ban. And is a proper trophy.

Club world cup is a good to have but won't be fussed if pool didn't get it.

Community shield is about laying a marker to city and saying we will be coming at you hard and prepared to get rammed in this season.

We never won it, surely we'll aim to do it for the first time. The European Super Cup too. Charity Shield is less important as a "trophy" than the first two, but as it's against City, it will be important mentally to beat them ahead of the new season. Apart from that, it's important that we build a habit of winning silverware. We're back on the map now with our first big after a long time. Give the best possible shot at winning everything we can (of course, knowing our priorities).

Just curious why did they include the European Super Cup in the tunnel at Anfield (and at Melwood) if they talk about 42 major trophies? Because it makes it 45 if we include the 3 European Super Cups.

If we win all 3 then Klopp will have a treble by the end of December according to the way Man City count trophies.

I would like to win all three but if we lose any I won't be that gutted, though I would like to win at least one or two of them. Again my desire is the League and the Champions League, though I would like to see a FA Cup run.

If we can add these second tier trophies to our illustrious historical trophy record, on top of the CL and League Cup of 2012, it would help to build some more recent history.

However, whilst only four matches in total, together with decent cup runs it all adds to the total number of matches we could play in a season we hope to win the league. A December journey to the Middle East, just ahead of a crucial Xmas period, isn't exactly ideal either.

I hope we keep a larger squad for the August to January period, to cope with the six competitions we'll contest in that time.

For me it's imperative that we strengthen the squad with quality replacements for Moreno, Sturridge and whoever else leaves, as well as bolstering the numbers with a few kids like Wilson and Brewster, who will hopefully come of age in the League Cup.
